The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) is a private liberal-arts-oriented[3] university in Sha Tin, New Territories, Hong Kong.[4]

The institute was founded as Hang Seng Management College in 2010 from the Hang Seng School of Commerce. The college was granted university title in 2018.

In November and December 2013, HSMC obtained accreditation from the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications for the following five programmes and was approved by the Education Bureau to offer degree programmes:[5] On 30 October 2018, the Chief Executive-in-Council approved the retitling of Hang Seng Management College into a university under Section 8(1) of the Post Secondary Colleges Ordinance,[6] following an institutional review by the HKCAAVQ.[7]

The Chief Executive in Council approved the university status of Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) on 30 October 2018. The HSMC is the first self-financing post-secondary education institution to acquire a university title since the publication of the revised roadmap of criteria for acquiring university title for post-secondary colleges registered under the Ordinance in 2015.[8]

Adopting the unique “Liberal + Professional” education model, HSUHK aims to nurture young talents with critical thinking, innovative minds, caring attitudes, moral values and social responsibility.[9]

Education Model

[edit]

With the adoption of “Liberal + Professional” model, the institute offers students a wide-ranging cultural foundation. This approach is enhanced by integrating professional disciplines, enabling students to gain a broad perspective alongside specialized professional knowledge. This combination equips students with both a comprehensive worldview and the practical skills necessary for their careers. [10]

The term "liberal" denotes an inclusive and interdisciplinary method that links various fields of knowledge, encourages critical thinking, and addresses problems, placing significant importance on the humanities and social sciences. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to recognize the value and impact (both economic and inherent) of the humanities and arts.[11]

On the other hand, "professional" indicates that numerous major programs are designed with a professional focus, aiming to provide students with the specialized skills necessary for their chosen careers. However, subjects like business, management, and IT are approached as liberal arts disciplines with an emphasis on "human values."[11]

History

[edit]

The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) has its roots tracing back to 1980, when the Hang Seng School of Commerce (HSSC) was established with funding from various organizations and individuals. From 1980 to 2009, HSSC was a pioneering and leading provider of post-secondary programmes in business and related areas.

In response to the Chief Executive's Policy Address in 2009, which highlighted the growing significance of quality private universities in Hong Kong, HSSC was re-structured in 2010 and became Hang Seng Management College (HSMC), a non-profit private university-level institution registered under the Post Secondary Colleges Ordinance to offer bachelor's and above degree programmes in diverse disciplines.

After a rigorous international accreditation process, in 2018, HSMC was granted approval by the Hong Kong government to change its title to "The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong" (HSUHK).[12]

HSUHK aspires to be a leading non-profit private liberal-arts-oriented university in the region, recognized for excellence in teaching, learning and research, and for its contributions to advancing society and the world. The university currently has five schools, around 6,000 full-time students, and over 200 full-time academic staff members.[9]

HSUHK offers a wide range of 4-year bachelor's (honours) degree programmes and master's degree programmes, many of which are unique and the first of their kind in the region. All of the university's programmes have been accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications and recognized by the governments of Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan.[7]

Academics

[edit]

The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong is listed 7th overall and 1st in the Greater China region as per 2023 AppliedHE ASEAN+ private university assessment exercise, conducted across the ASEAN+ region by the AppliedHE[13].

The institute is also ranked #550-600 in QS university ranking for Asian in 2023.[14]
