Hodson Hall is one of the residence halls atIndiana Wesleyan University(commonly referred to as IWU) which is a private, Evangelical Christian, liberal arts university located in Marion, Indiana that is affiliated with the Wesleyan Church denomination.[1]

The University offers various liberal arts (including 87 undergraduate majors) and professional educational programs leading to the Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Education and Master of Business Administration degrees, along with a doctoral program in Organizational Leadership. In addition, a new Master of Divinity degree program will be offered in the fall of 2009.[2]

History

Hodson Hall was constructed in 1996 as a women's residence hall and stayed that way for three academic years until it was converted into a men's residence hall and has been since.

The building was originally called "New Hall," though informally called "Immanuel Hall" by the residents. In 1999 the hall was officially named after Arthur L. and Nelle Hodson. The Hodson's were generous givers to Indiana Wesleyan University.

Arthur Hodson worked for STAR Financial Bank, which derived it's name from the first names of the early principals (Selah Wright, Thomas Marcuccilli, Arthur Hodson, and Ralph Marcuccilli).[3]

Nelle Hodson graduated from Taylor University in 1943 and was a home economics teacher for more than 30 years. She married James Alspaugh on September 14, 1944. He preceded her in death in 1983. She later married Arthur Hodson on September 21, 1996. She passed away on July 28, 2005 at the age of 82.[4]

Tau

The Greek letter "T" is pronounced "Tau" ("au" as in "ouch"). The Tau cross developed from the Greek Translation of Ezekiel 9:4, which reads that those faithful to God will receive a "Tau" on their forehead, showing that they will be spared the judgement of God. This mark commended Israel to continue in their faithfulness to God until the end of their lives. Many Historians believe the Tau cross to be an accurate representation of the cross on which Jesus was crucified.

Saint Francis of Assisi was fond of Ezekiel 9:4 and often signed his letters simply "T". He chose this symbol to represent the order of the Franciscans. The rich history of the Tau cross, through scripture and the monastic movement has led to its association with lifelong devotion to the crucified Christ through humility and service. Two "H's" can be seen in the Tau, one horizontally and the other vertically. These "H's" stand for Hodson Hall and the wish to exemplify the values of Christ as represented in the Tau.

Hodson Water Fight

The Hodson Water Fight is the Hodson Hall event for Res Life week, which is the first week of school. The local fire departments assist in setting up two fire hoses set across from each other and hang a large metal ball from a wire. Three men teams use the fire hose to squirt the metal ball toward their opposing goal to win the round. The competition is single round elimination.

Assassins

The object of Assassins is to use Nerf guns to eliminate other competitors one by one in an attempt to be the last "assassin" standing. A name of another assassin is given to each participant they are responsible to 'assassinate' with their Nerf gun. The assassin mush hit their opponent two times before they are considered dead. Once a player is killed, they must give their name to their assassin as the event continues until one assassin remains.

Wounds/bandages In order to kill the target, the assassin must shoot him twice. The first shot is known as "a wound shot" and the second shot is known as "a kill". After the assassin wounds his opponent, they are not allowed to score their second shot on him immediately. Before the second shot is valid, the opponent must have a chance to "bandage" himself up. To bandage himself, the wounded person must step foot inside his own room.

Hunting the Hunter If one finds out who is hunting them, they can help themselves by shooting their assassin first and gaining immunity for thirty minutes. One can do this as many times as they want to, at any time they need to. In the case of the hunter and the hunted shooting each other simultaneously, the advantage must go to the player being hunted, resulting in an immunity shot.

Reporting Kills After one has wounded their opponent, has bandaged himself, and has shot him a second time, they must report the kill to the "Game-Maker". To report the kill, one must email him at the appropriate email address and put the kill report in the subject column.

Areas of Play Battlefields can include dorm lobbies and TV lounges, dorm hallways and stairwells, campus lawns, and the Student Center. Any dorm room or apartment on campus must be by invitation as no forced entry is allowed. Safe havens include bathrooms in any building, any academic building on campus, library, wellness center, and campus Chapel.

Press Your Unit

Each person has the opportunity to "max out", meaning to bench press the highest weight they think they can do at least one time all by themselves. The highest weight they lift is recorded for their floor they live on. "Spotters" are people who stand next to the bench press and prevent injury from those attempting to lift weight. The floor attaining the highest amount of weight receives a prize.

Boxer Caroling

Boxer Caroling began in Williams Hall until the Hodson adopted the tradition when they became a men's hall and tweaked the program to include boxers. This Christmas tradition takes place every December. Students jog through each women's dorm (and some old girl's dorms now occupied by men) on campus singing Christmas songs in their boxers, and return to Hodson to end the event.

Beard Month

Beard month originated in Carmin Hall where the residents participated in "Lumberjack Month." When Hodson was converted to a male residence hall, Carmin was converted to a female hall, and the Carmin Staff and this tradition followed. Beard Month begins at the beginning of "No Shave November" or sometimes "Furry February" and ends the last day of the month. Participants shave at midnight to kick off the month and have their picture taken. They grow their facial hair for the entire month and on the last day of the month the beards are judged by a group of females and awards are given for the best, and worst, beards.
