The Isle of Wight training college is a general further education college (GFE).
History
The college operates with a broad curriculum to reflect the needs of the island community. The College is the island's major provider of further education and training for some 8,000 learners and has built more accommodation over the past five years. It is also a Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) in four areas; care, hospitality, marine engineering and early years.
In a recent Office for Standards in Education inspection The College was rated as a Grade 1, a common grade.[citation needed] The inspectors commented:
"The Isle of Wight College is an outstanding college that is working most effectively to meet the needs of the island community. Standards are very high and improving for all learners who make outstanding progress during their time at The College. Teaching and learning are good and improving. Guidance and support for learners are outstanding."
Location
The main campus is sited in a central location on the outskirts of Newport, the county town of the Isle of Wight and the island's principal retail centre. A number of other centres around the island are used for adult education, basic skills, family learning programmes and for information and communication technology (ICT) courses.
Facilities
- The College's Learning Resources Centre (LRC) is open to all College staff and students. It is housed in a building and has two floors. The LRC is a space for private study and group work. LRC staff support the information and study needs of students, including a Library where books, DVDs, videos, the internet, newspapers, magazines, and career information are available and the Learning Zone, where there are over 20 networked computers.
- The Play Station College nursery is set within the grounds of the College in a purpose built new building. It offers day-care provision for students, staff and the wider community. Babies and children from 6 weeks to 5 years attend the nursery during term time. During holiday periods children up to the ages of 8 years are accepted.
- 6 Form Centre is set within the college grounds to provide students with A Level-based courses, which range from a variety of subjects stretching from Arts to Maths & Information Technology.
- A new building was constructed adjacent to the main college site, it was completed in 2015. The subjects it dedicates to are: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (hence its name, STEM). It also contains 2 floors.
- A smaller building to the south, named Pathways, has been built for students with disabilities and/or learning difficulties, and includes a swimming pool.
- The College supports horticulture and gardening, where students can grow various types of plants and flowers on its grounds. There are multiple greenhouses occupied within the gardens.
Marine Training
The college conducts some marine training programs including Boat Construction, Boat Maintenance, and Marine Industry Leadership.[1]
International
The college hosts students from countries across the world. Successful international students gain Cambridge qualifications[clarification needed] and experience living in an English speaking culture.
Student voice
The college has a student voice, which is made up of typically two people from each class, however this number can change as the sizes of the classes. Students attend meetings with the aim of improving life for students at the college.
