István Kovács (born 16 September 1984) is a Romanian professional football referee who officiates primarily in the Liga I.[1] He has been a full international for FIFA since 2010 and is ranked as a UEFA elite category referee.[2]
Kovács was selected for Euro 2020 alongside his compatriot Ovidiu Hațegan. He was in charge of one group stage game between Netherlands and North Macedonia.
On 26 April 2022, Kovács handled the first leg of The UEFA Champions League Semi-finals between Manchester City and Real Madrid, game won by the English side with 4-3.[3] After a good performance, Kovács was praised by media especially for the advantage let before Bernardo Silva`s goal. As a reward probably, UEFA Referees Committee chose him to officiate the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League Final
On 25 May 2022, Kovács was in charge of the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League Final between A.S. Roma and Feyenoord, the first final in this competition.
István Kovács was appointed at the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup, together with his compatriots Assistant Referees Vasile Marinescu and Mihai Artene.[4]
Kovács made a crucial mistake that led to a decisive goal in the UEFA Europa Conference League match between Levski Sofia and Ħamrun Spartans. He didn't stop the game after wrong kick-off execution, in which a player was 15 feet into the opposing half and seconds later assisted for a winning goal.[5]
