The Vampire Diaries is an American fantasy-drama television series picked up by The CW for their fall 2009 schedule.[1] It is adapted from L.J. Smith's novel series of the same name by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec. The show's first season featured a regular cast of ten characters. Since then two of these characters have been written out, while two new characters have been added to the main cast.

The focal points of the show are the love triangle formed by series' protagonist Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and vampire-brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and the town's supernatural history, involving Elena's friends and relatives.

Main characters

The following is a list of series regulars from The Vampire Diaries. Some are currently starring or have left the series over the course of the two seasons.

Elena Gilbert

Nina Dobrev portrays Elena Gilbert.

Elena Gilbert, portrayed by Nina Dobrev since the pilot, is the series' protagonist. Elena lives with her younger brother, Jeremy, and her aunt, Jenna, who became her legal guardian after her parents died in a car crash. Her best friend is Bonnie Bennett, who later discovers she is a witch, and she is frenemies with Caroline Forbes, although when Caroline is turned into a vampire they become good friends. Before the beginning of the series she was in a relationship with Matt Donovan, who still carried a torch for her at the start of the series. She later begins a relationship with Stefan Salvatore, whom she discovers is a vampire. Stefan's brother Damon also falls in love with Elena. At the end of season one, Elena discovers that her parents aren't actually her biological parents, but that she is really the daughter of John Gilbert, who she thought was her uncle, and Isobel Flemming, who was turned into a vampire. In season two she learns that she is a Petrova doppelgänger, just like Katherine Pierce, which means that she has to be sacrificed to release Klaus' werewolf side. The sacrifice later happens, but Elena is saved, because John sacrificed himself for her after being put under a spell by Bonnie. However, her aunt Jenna is turned in to a vampire and, as part of the sacrifice, is killed by Klaus, leaving Elena without a guardian. In the season two finale, while Damon is dying due to a werewolf bite, she forgives him for forcing her to drink his blood and kisses him with the thought that it might be Damon's last day, however Damon gets cured by drinking Klaus' blood.

Stefan Salvatore

Paul Wesley portrays vampire Stefan Salvatore.

Stefan Salvatore, portrayed by Paul Wesley since the pilot, is the series' male protagonist. Stefan was born in Mystic Falls in 1847. Both he and his brother, Damon, fell in love with the same girl, Katherine Pierce, a vampire. In 1864, Stefan was turned into a vampire after being shot by his father with Katherine's blood in his system, before unwillingly killing his father. Damon, who was turned into a vampire as well, promised Stefan an eternity of misery as he was angry that Katherine had turned Stefan as well. Stefan was unable to resist human blood and became addicted, killing lots of people, until he was taught to control it by a vampire named Lexie, who later became his best friend. After decades of absence, Stefan returned to Mystic Falls after he saved Elena from a car crash and noticed that she looked exactly like Katherine. Stefan and Elena begin a relationship and he reveals to her that he is a vampire. However Damon returns to Mystic Falls too and he also falls in love with Elena. Further on in the series, Damon and Stefan start to bond as brothers again and it becomes apparent that they do love each other. Because of his addiction to human blood, Stefan only drank animal blood in the beginning of the series, which made him weaker than other vampires. In season two Stefan starts to take small amounts of Elena's blood each day to mitigate its effect on him and to increase his strength. When Katherine returns it is discovered that she has always been in love with Stefan and not with Damon, however Stefan is in love with Elena and not interested in her. Stefan starts to build a friendship with Caroline Forbes after she is turned into a vampire. In the season two finale, Stefan offers himself to Klaus in order to get Klaus' blood, which will cure Damon from his werewolf bite. Klaus makes Stefan addicted to human blood again and Stefan ends up killing a girl.

Damon Salvatore

Ian Somerhalder portrays Damon Salvatore.

Damon Salvatore, portrayed by Ian Somerhalder since the pilot, serves as the series' anti-hero. Damon was born in Mystic Falls in 1840. When Katherine Pierce came to town, both he and his brother, Stefan Salvatore, fell in love with her. In 1864 he is turned into a vampire after being shot by his father with Katherine's blood in his system. His transitioning was completed after Stefan, also now a vampire, convinced him to kill a woman. Damon, angry that Katherine had turned Stefan as well, vowed to make Stefan's life miserable. More than a hundred years later, Damon returns to Mystic Falls to free Katherine, who he believes is locked in a tomb there. Damon meets Elena and, still hating his brother, decides to bring havoc to her relationship with Stefan. When he finds out that Katherine is not in the tomb and has been alive the entire time, he finds comfort in Elena. He then starts to fall in love with her. His relationship with Stefan also improves and it is shown that Damon actually does care about his brother. In the beginning of the series, Damon kills people impulsively, but as the series progresses he starts to act more humane and stops killing people. He even starts friendships with others, such as Alaric Saltzman and Sheriff Forbes. When Katherine returns in season two and tells him that she has always loved Stefan and not him, his love for her vanishes and he starts to hate her. He becomes close to another vampire named Rose. When Rose is bitten by a werewolf, Damon is left with no other choice but to stake her and briefly falls back into his old ways, killing a young girl. Damon then starts a relationship with a reporter called Andie Star. He compels her to agree to him taking her blood and uses her to distract himself. However he later tells her to leave, for he is afraid that he won't be able to control himself. Despite these relationships, Damon still loves Elena deeply. When Damon is dying, due to a werewolf bite, Elena tells him that she has feelings for him too and they share a kiss, however Damon is cured after drinking Klaus' blood brought to him by Katherine.

Jeremy Gilbert

Steven R. McQueen portrays Elena's younger brother Jeremy.

Jeremy Gilbert, portrayed by Steven R. McQueen since the pilot, is Elena's younger brother, later revealed to be her cousin. In the beginning the series he is emotionally damaged by the death of his parents and uses drugs. He is in love with Vicki Donovan, who uses drugs as well, and they later start a relationship. However Jeremy later witnesses how Vicki is killed by Stefan after Damon had turned her into a vampire. Elena, afraid that Jeremy couldn't handle this, asks Damon to make Jeremy forget this and take away his pain. This causes Jeremy to become more stable and to stop taking drugs. Jeremy then starts a relationship with a vampire named Anna, but Anna is killed by John Gilbert, Jeremy's uncle, at the end of season one. Jeremy, not wanting to deal with this pain, tries to become a vampire by overdosing while having Anna's blood in his system, but he fails. He is later given John's ring, which protects him from a death caused by any supernatural. In season two, Jeremy falls in love with Bonnie Bennett and they start a relationship. Jeremy later loses both his aunt and uncle on the day of the sacrifice, leaving him and Elena without a guardian. In the season two finale, Jeremy is accidentally shot to death by Sheriff Forbes, but brought back to life by Bonnie. However the spell Bonnie used has consequences and at the end of the episode, Jeremy sees Vicki and Anna.

Jenna Sommers

Jenna Sommers, portrayed by Sara Canning in season one and two, is Elena and Jeremy's aunt. She is the sister of their mother, Miranda Sommers Gilbert. After her sister and her sister's husband were killed in a car crash, she took Elena and Jeremy in and became their legal guardian. In the beginning Jenna has trouble coping with her new role as an authority figure, for she used to be a partying college student, but as the series progresses she becomes better at it. She begins dating news reporter Logan Fell, who had cheated on her in the past. However, Logan is killed by history teacher Alaric Saltzman and Jenna is told that he has left town, which hurts but doesn't surprise her. She later begins a relationship with Alaric. In season two, John Gilbert begins to cause trouble between Jenna and Alaric, and Jenna begins to suspect that Alaric isn't completely honest with her. When Isobel, Alaric's supposed dead wife, shows up at Jenna's door, Jenna becomes angry with Elena and Alaric, who then tell her everything. Jenna is later turned into a vampire by Klaus to be used in the sacrifice that will release his werewolf side. She attempts to kill Greta Martin, Klaus' witch, to stop the sacrifice and save Elena, at which point Klaus stakes her to death. Jenna is buried near Miranda, Grayson and John Gilbert.

Bonnie Bennett

Kat Graham portrays witch Bonnie Bennett.

Bonnie Bennett, portrayed by Kat Graham since the pilot, is Elena Gilbert's best friend. She is also good friends with Caroline Forbes. In the beginning of the series, Bonnie discovers that she is born from a line of witches and that she is also a witch. Her grandmother, a witch too, helps her learn to use her powers, which causes them to create a strong bond. When her grandmother dies, Bonnie is devastated, but she keeps training and as the series develops she becomes more and more powerful. In the midst of season two, she starts a relationship with Jeremy Gilbert, Elena's younger brother. She later discovers from warlock Luca Martin that the only way to kill Klaus, the original vampire who wants to kill Elena, is for her to get the power of one-hundred dead witches, which she later gets. She then pretends to be dead, a scheme of Damon's, in order to trick Klaus. But when she brings Klaus to the brink of death, Elijah does not kill him, as planned, and carries him away before she could react. In the season two finale Bonnie is able to save Jeremy from dying after she tells Emily that she loves him.

Caroline Forbes

Caroline Forbes, portrayed by Candice Accola since the pilot, is Elena Gilbert and Bonnie Bennett's insecure friend. Caroline is the daughter of the sheriff of Mystic Falls, Liz Forbes, with whom she has a troubled relationship. Her father left her and her mother when he came clean about being gay. In the beginning she is shown as shallow, self-absorbed and jealous of Elena, however during the series Caroline becomes a nicer person. She later starts a relationship with Matt Donovan. In season two Caroline is turned into a vampire after drinking Damon's blood, being killed by Katherine and unwillingly killing a boy and feeding on him. Stefan Salvatore helps Caroline to control her lust for blood and they start to build a friendship. After turning, she also becomes closer to Elena. She discovers that she is not able to control her lust when she is around Matt, and therefore tricks him into breaking up with her for his own safety. When Tyler Lockwood is turned into a werewolf, Caroline helps him and he starts to develop romantic feelings for her. However Caroline is still in love with Matt and they get back together as Tyler leaves town. Caroline tells Matt that she is a vampire, but Matt asks Caroline to use her vampire abilities to make him forget. However Matt had vervain in his system and merely pretended to forget, which was a plan Liz came up with after he had told her about Caroline. Matt later ends up confessing to Caroline that she never made him forget and that her mother knows of her being a vampire, as well. He then breaks up with Caroline due to the fact that he has many problems and doesn't want to deal with the fact he's dating a vampire. Later, her mother finally accepts Caroline as a vampire.

Matt Donovan

Matthew "Matt" Donovan, portrayed by Zach Roerig since the pilot, is Elena Gilbert's ex-boyfriend. Vicki Donovan is Matt's older sister, who he has to take care of all by himself, for their troubled mother has left them. When Vicki dies, Matt is devastated. His best friend is Tyler Lockwood. Elena had broken up with Matt after her parents had died and in the beginning of the series Matt still has feelings for her and wants to get back together with her. However he later starts a relationship with Caroline Forbes. When Caroline is turned into a vampire in season two, she breaks up with Matt, for she can't control her lust for blood around him. However later they get back together. Caroline then tells him that she is a vampire, which upsets him for he thinks Caroline had something to do with Vicki's death. Matt asks Caroline to make him forget, however he doesn't forget for he had vervain in his system, which was a plan Sheriff Forbes came up with after he had told her everything. However he finds out he still cares for Caroline and tells her about the plan. He then breaks up with her due to the fact that he has too much to handle with work and school and doesn't want to deal with the fact that Caroline is a vampire.

Vicki Donovan

Victoria "Vicki" Donovan, portrayed by Kayla Ewell in the first seven episodes of the first season, is Matt Donovan's older sister. Vicki is a troubled girl and is addicted to drugs. She is being taken care of by Matt, for their mother has left them. In the beginning of the series she is dating Tyler Lockwood, however Jeremy Gilbert also had feelings for her. Vicki, acknowledging that she has feelings for Jeremy too, later breaks up with Tyler and starts a relationship with Jeremy. She is later turned into a vampire by Damon Salvatore. As a vampire she couldn't control her lust for blood and when she started attacking Jeremy, Stefan killed her with a stake through her heart. Stefan and Damon make it seem as if Vicki has left town. Later in season one, her body is found by Caroline Forbes, causing a devastated Matt and Jeremy. In the season two finale, Vicki appears to Jeremy, after he was brought back to life by a spell of Bonnie's, which was said to have consequences.

Tyler Lockwood

Michael Trevino portrays werewolf Tyler Lockwood.

Tyler Lockwood, portrayed by Michael Trevino since the pilot, is Matt Donovan's best friend. Tyler is the son of Mystic Fall's mayor, who sometimes acts violently towards Tyler, however when he dies, Tyler is really upset. In the beginning of the series he is dating Vicki Donovan. However they break up after Vicki realizes that she has feelings for Jeremy Gilbert. In the second season Tyler finds out that he and his entire father's family carry the werewolf gene. After he accidentally kills a girl, Tyler becomes a werewolf. He then starts to get feelings for Caroline Forbes, after she tells him that she is a vampire and she helps him deal with becoming a werewolf. However his feelings aren't returned, for Caroline is still in love with Matt. When Jules, another werewolf, comes to town, he joins her and they eventually leave town. He later returns and Caroline asks him to stay.

Alaric Saltzman

Alaric Saltzman, portrayed by Matt Davis since season one, as a recurring character from episodes nine till thirteen and as a main character from episode fourteen onwards, is the history teacher at Mystic Falls High. Alaric originally comes to town to kill Damon Salvatore, because he believes that Damon killed his wife. However it is later found out that his wife, Isobel Flemming, isn't dead, but that on her own request she was turned into a vampire by Damon. He then starts to become friends with Damon. Alaric owns a Gilbert Ring, which he got from Isobel, which prevents him from getting killed by anything supernatural, however John Gilbert later claims the ring. Alaric starts a relationship with Jenna Sommers. In the second season John starts causing trouble between Jenna and Alaric and when Jenna meets Isobel, she knows that Alaric is keeping things from her and she leaves him. His body is later possessed by Klaus and he uses this ruse to gain the group's trust. Eventually Klaus releases Alaric and he gets back together with Jenna, but soon afterwards Klaus has her turned into a vampire and killed for his sacrifice ritual, leaving him heartbroken.

Katherine Pierce

Katherine Pierce, portrayed by Nina Dobrev since season one, is one of the main antagonists of the series. Originally known as Katerina Petrova, she was born in Bulgaria in the late 15th century and later banished to England after having an illegitimate child. Upon meeting Klaus and Elijah, two of the "original vampires", she found out that she is a Petrova Doppelganger, which means that she has to be sacrificed to release Klaus' werewolf side. She used a vampire named Trevor, who'd fallen in love with her, to escape and tricked vampire Rose into turning her, so she would no longer break the curse. Klaus, however, wanted revenge, so she spent her entire life running from him. Hundreds of years later, Katherine arrived in Mystic Falls, where both Stefan Salvatore and Damon Salvatore fell in love with her. When all the vampires in Mystic Falls were rounded up, she escaped. During her stay in Mystic Falls she had given Damon and Stefan her blood and turned them into vampires after they were shot. Damon, who thought Katherine was locked up in a tomb, spent 145 years loving her and trying to find a way to free her. When he does, he finds out that she is not in the tomb and was alive this entire time. In the last episode of season one, Katherine returns to Mystic Falls. She tells Damon that she has always been in love with Stefan and tries to break up the relatioship between Stefan and Elena Gilbert, the next Petrova Doppelganger. It is later revealed that her real reason for returning is to get the moonstone and offer it and Elena to Klaus, in order to be free from him. However she is locked up in a tomb by Stefan and Damon, which has a spell that makes sure vampires can't leave and when the spell is broken, she is compelled by Elijah to stay. However Elijah gets killed and Katherine becomes free again, but she chooses to start helping Stefan and Damon. When Klaus comes to Mystic Falls, he kidnaps her and keeps her in Alaric's apartment, where he tortures her. However he later tells her that she can leave, telling Stefan that she won't be far.

Klaus

Played by Joseph Morgan as a recurring character in season two and as a series regular in season three, Lord Niklaus, more commonly known as Klaus, is the oldest of vampires and one of the main antagonists of the series. He and his family, including Elijah, became the very first vampires. It was later found out that his mother had committed adultery and Klaus' biological father was a werewolf, which made Klaus the only vampire/werewolf hybrid. However his werewolf powers were bound to the moonstone by a band of witches. To release his werewolf powers a ritual, in which a werewolf, a vampire and a Petrova dopplegänger have to be sacrificed, has to take place. He created a fake curse, the curse of the sun and the moon, in order to have two species look for a Petrova dopplegänger. The first Petrova dopplegänger Klaus found was Katerina Petrova, but she escaped Klaus with the moonstone and made a vampire turn her, so that she would be useless for the ritual. However Klaus wanted to revenge Katerina and she spent hundreds of years running for him. Hundreds of years later Klaus, through Isobel Saltzman, finds Elena Gilbert, the next Petrova dopplegänger and Katerina. He kidnaps Katerina and makes her torture herself. He also takes over the body of Alaric Saltzman in order to spy on Elena. After collecting the moonstone, a werewolf, Jules, the Petrova dopplegänger, Elena, and turning Jenna Sommers into a vampire, he begins the ritual. However Bonnie Bennett and Elijah, who was angry at Klaus for he had killed their entire family, have come up with a plan to kill Klaus after the ritual is completed and he is transitioning. However when Bonnie, with the power of a hundred witches, has Klaus weakened and Elijah has to kill him, Klaus tells Elijah that he could tell him where the bodies of his family members are and Elijah saves him. However when Klaus gets back at full strength, he kills Elijah. He then blackmails Stefan Salvatore into becoming addicted to human blood again.

Recurring characters

The following is a list of characters that are, or at one time were, a recurring guest on the series. They are listed in the order that they first appeared on the show. Some characters have had storylines that have spanned multiple seasons, while others are restricted to arcs that occurred during a single season of the show.

Sheriff Forbes

Portrayed by Marguerite MacIntyre since season one, Sheriff Elizabeth "Liz" Forbes is the sheriff of Mystic Falls and the mother of Caroline Forbes. Her husband has left her for a man. She is first introduced at a Founders Day party at Mayor Lockwood's house. There she is shown to have a strained relationship with her daughter. However, later actions, such as arresting a bartender when Caroline got drunk, show Liz loves her daughter very much and is willing to do anything for her. She was revealed to be a member of the Founders Council, a secret organization dedicated to protecting Mystic Falls from vampires. Along with Logan Fell, Liz led the hunt for the vampires. When Fell is killed, Liz finds the body and covers up his death by saying he has left town for the Bahamas. Fell later returns as a vampire and swears to turn Caroline into a vampire to have his revenge against Liz. However Caroline is saved by Damon Salvatore's intervention. Liz appears in several other episodes protecting the town from vampire attacks and attending Founding Families events. To get the Council of his back, Damon frames Lexi as the vampire and saves Liz by killing Lexi, so as to make him look heroic in her eyes. He then joins the Council and provides it with vervain, which used to be Zach's job. Liz is seen letting him know about the Council's plans and is also his staunchest ally among the Founding Families, not suspecting he is a vampire. In the season one finale she is smacked across the head and locked up to a desk with her own handcuffs by John Gilbert, because she doesn't agree with his plan to capture the tomb vampires. She is later saved by Carol Lockwood, but they are unable to save Mayor Lockwood, who is burned with the vampires. Liz then finds out that her daughter has been in a car crash and goes to the hospital, where she tells Tyler Lockwood that his father has passed away.

In season two, Liz is relieved that Caroline pulled through, though she does not know that her miraculous recovery is due to her becoming a vampire. Carol accuses Liz of getting Mayor Lockwood killed and Liz asks for Damon's help to figure out who did it. Damon reminds the two ladies that they are on the same team. Liz is later informed by Mason Lockwood that Damon and Stefan Salvatore are vampires. She is very skeptical at first and refuses to believe that Damon, who she considers a friend, is a vampire. She tests him by slipping vervain into his drink and he reacts negatively to it. When Damon and Stefan assume Mason did it and attempt to take care of him in the woods, Liz appears and shoots both Stefan and Damon and has her deputes inject them with vervain. Liz tortures Damon in an attempt to learn how he and Stefan can walk in the sun, but is interrupted when Elena Gilbert appears, followed by Caroline, who kills the deputies. Forbes is locked up in the cellar at the Salvatore House so that the vervain can get out of her system and she can be compelled to forget everything. Now knowing that her daughter is a vampire, she asks Damon to keep Caroline away from her and says that her daughter is gone. Caroline has a heart to heart with her mom, who then accepts Caroline being a vampire, but Caroline still decides to compel her and Liz loses her memory of the whole ordeal. After Matt Donovan has discovered the truth about vampires from Caroline, he tells Liz, who comes up with a plan to make Matt pretend to be compelled to forget, while he actually has vervain in his system. Liz then uses Matt to spy on Caroline, who she thinks is a monster now. Liz tries to capture and kill Damon, but accidentally shoots Jeremy Gilbert instead. Believing she has killed Jeremy, she is shocked to discover that Bonnie Bennett is able to resurrect him. She also finds out that Matt came clean to Caroline. After confessing that neither wanted to secretly live in fear of one another, Liz accepts her daughter for what she is and hugs her.

Richard Lockwood

Richard Lockwood, portrayed by Robert Pralgo in season one, is Tyler Lockwood's father, the mayor of Mystic Falls and the head of the Founder's Council. He has a strained relationship with his son and acts very authoritative towards him. It seems that he thinks of Tyler as a disappointment and when Tyler gets into a fist-fight with Matt Donovan at a party, he tells him to never embarrass his family again. He also is shown to be violent and a bully, for when Tyler gets into a fight with Jeremy Gilbert, he takes them outside and tells them to fight rather than talk to solve their problems. This probably is the reason why Tyler is violent and a bully as well. He has an unhappy marriage with Carol Lockwood and they constantly fight with each other. He also flirts with Pearl. Although he seems kind and amicable to the outside world, he is actually quite selfish, for when Mr. Tanner dies, he is shown to be more concerned with how his death would affect the football team and finding a replacement. In the season one finale, during Founders Day, John Gilbert talks Richard into sanctioning a strike against the tomb vampires using Johnathan Gilbert's invention. Richard and John know that Sheriff Forbes would never approve of their plan, so they stage a coup against her. Richard rallies her deputies to their cause while John knocks her out and cuffs her in her office. Richard then finds Tyler and tells him to go home, showing genuine care for Tyler. When the device goes off, Richard and Tyler are both affected by it and the deputies inject him with vervain, thinking he's a vampire, and bring him to the basement where they are going to burn the vampires. In the basement, Damon Salvatore notices that Richard isn't affected by the vervain and he tells him that he isn't a vampire. Richard then staggers into a vampire, who snaps his neck. Richard's body is burned in the fire. It is later revealed that Richard was affected by the device, because he is a descendant from George Lockwood and therefore has the werewolf gene, which gives him heightened hearing. After his death, his wife took over his job as mayor and Damon took over his job as head of the Founder's Council.

Carol Lockwood

Portrayed by Susan Walters since season one, Carol Lockwood is the wife of the late Richard Lockwood and the mother of Tyler Lockwood. She is a member of The Founder's Council and knows of the existence of vampires, but not of the existence of werewolves. Throughout season one, Carol is locked in a hostile relationship with her husband, Richard Lockwood. She acts as a bad influence on her son Tyler, with much of his negative behavior emerging as a direct result of her snobbish behavior and emotional outbursts. In the season finale she shows, for the first time, that she cares for Richard, when he is knocked out by the device. After releasing Sheriff Forbes, they vainly try to save him from the burning basement. Carol is shaken and upset by her husband's death and blames it on Sheriff Forbes' deputies, but Damon Salvatore reminds her and the sheriff that they are on the same side and that they have to stick together. At the end of the day, Carol finds Tyler in his father's study thrashing the room in an angry tantrum. His hostile behavior frightens her and she is further shaken after Mason Lockwood steps in to calm Tyler down. Carol later informs Damon that she is replacing Richard as the mayor until the next election and asks him to lead the council, which he accepts. At the end of Crying Wolf, after Tyler has turned into a werewolf, she finds a note from Tyler, telling her that he has ran away. It is later revealed that Elijah convinced her to stop taking vervain, so that he would be able to compel her. When Elena frees him, he takes her to the Lockwood Mansion where he compels Carol to let him take refuge in the home while she goes away. In The Last Day she is compelled to make a phone call to Tyler, saying that she is in the hospital and she wants him to come and visit. When she walks up the stairs, Maddox is there and she asks him why she had to make the phone call and he says that she had a bad fall and uses his powers to push her off the stairs and onto the ground. Later she is in the hospital and Tyler visits her.

Emily Bennett

Bianca Lawson portrayed Emily Bennett, Katherine Pierce's handmaid and Bonnie's ancestor.

Played by Bianca Lawson in seasons one and two, Emily Bennett was the handmaiden of Katherine Pierce in 1864 as well as a powerful witch. She is a direct descendant of one of the women accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials, which took place in the Salem area of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1692. Emily is also the 4th great-grandmother of Bonnie Bennett through Sheila Bennett. She was the one who gave Katherine, Pearl, Anna, Harper, Damon and Stefan Salvatore the jewelry which enabled them to walk in the sun. Although she helped these vampires, she also secretly fought against them, for she spelled Jonathan Gilbert's inventions, including the device, which could hurt vampires. When the vampires were rounded up by the Founding Families she and Damon Salvatore made a bargain. Damon would protect Emily's descendants and Emily would use her grimoire to protect Katherine by entombing her with 26 other vampires under the old Fell's Church. She was later burned at the stake by the Founding Families and her possessions, including her grimoire, were taken and buried in Giuseppe Salvatore's grave. Damon rescued Emily's children when the townspeople came for her. In season one Emily possesses Bonnie in order to stop Damon from freeing Katherine from the tomb. In season two, Bonnie takes on the power of a hundred dead witches, which includes Emily, by performing a spell on the place where the witches were burned. Bonnie and Stefan later go there again to ask the witches if they know a cure for a werewolf bite, in order to help Damon. Emily possesses Bonnie and tells Stefan there isn't a cure, but when Bonnie is herself again, she tells Stefan that Emily mentioned Klaus, whose blood later turns out to be the cure for a werewolf bite. When Jeremy dies, Bonnie is able to save him with help of Emily after she tells her that she loves him.

Anna

Played by Malese Jow in seasons one and two, Annabelle, in short Anna, is a vampire that came town in order to free her mother from the tomb underneath Fell's Church. Anna first appears at a local library, where she befriends Jeremy Gilbert. She helps him with his paper for history class. Anna later turns out to be a vampire who was in Mystic Falls in 1864 with her mother Pearl. She wants to open the tomb where the 26 vampires, including her mother, are trapped. It is revealed that she has turned Noah and Ben McKittrick into vampires in order to make them help her save her mother. She has also turned Logan Fell in order to get his ancestor Honoria Fell's diaries. It is also revealed that she befriended Jeremy Gilbert in order to obtain his ancestor's journal. Anna later kidnaps Elena Gilbert and Bonnie Bennett in order to make Bonnie open the tomb, but they are saved by Stefan Salvatore, who kills Ben in the process. After Bonnie opens the tomb for Damon Salvatore to get Katherine Pierce out, Anna succeeds into sneeking in and getting her mother out. She later reveals to Damon that she knew Katherine wasn't in the tomb, but needed him to believe it in order for her to get her mother out. However Anna has started to develop romantic feelings for Jeremy. After seeing Anna's vampire veins appear, Jeremy begins to suspect that she is not human and later tests his theory by "accidentally" cutting his hand, forcing her to drink his blood. Later that night, she confronts him in his room, claiming that she could have killed him and should have, but when asked why she didn't, she replies, "I don't know. Maybe I'm just a sucker for guys like you... lost." He then repeatedly requests to be turned, but would not state his reason, and is refused. Anna initially attempts to hide her involvement with him from her mother, as he is a Gilbert, but it is found out when Pearl notices their communication at the Mystic Grill. Anna and her mother end up in a short, heated argument, which ends when Pearl, still hurt from Johnathan Gilbert's betrayal, slaps her daughter. Angry, Anna agrees to change Jeremy, only to discover that his motive for wanting it is to get over his first love, Vicki Donovan, who he suspects might have been a vampire and is now revealed to be long dead. After a short period of distance, they make up, both admitting to having used each other to begin with, but have fallen in love along the way. She enrolls in high school in order to spend time with him, and they begin a romantic relationship. Tragically, Pearl is killed by Jeremy's uncle John Gilbert, devastating Anna, but she does not seek revenge. After her mother's death, she shows up in Jeremy's room in tears, telling him about what happened to her mother. He sympathizes with her, as he's lost his own parents and consoles her. On Founder's Day, Anna goes to Jeremy with a vial of her blood, telling him that if he drinks it and dies, he will become a vampire. He is unsure, but she leaves the vial for him, just in case he changes his mind. She is with Jeremy when John Gilbert sets off the device. Anna is immediately incapacitated, because she is within a five block radius of the device. A policeman finds her with Jeremy and she is injected with vervain and dragged to the Gilbert building to be burned alive, a replication of the original plan to eradicate the vampires in 1864. When John Gilbert sees Anna lying in the building with the other vampires, he stakes her, possibly out of mercy for her to receive a less painful death or out of anger that she is dating his nephew. Damon sees what happens to her and after he tells Jeremy she has died, he admits he actually felt sorry for her and wanted to help, but couldn't. Anna's body is burned in the fire with the other vampires who were caught. Jeremy questions whether it would be better to be a vampire and Damon tells him it would be easier to turn the emotions off. Later, Jeremy drinks Anna's blood and takes several sleeping pills, in order to become a vampire and be able to forget all about the misery in his life. In the season two finale, Anna appears to Jeremy, after he was brought back to life by a spell of Bonnie's, which was said to have consequences.

Isobel Flemming

Mia Kirshner portrayed Elena's biological mother Isobel Flemming.

Played by Mia Kirshner in seasons one and two, Isobel is Elena's birth mother and a descendant of Katerina Petrova (Katherine). She is a vampire who was turned by Damon at her own request, and claims to be a messenger from Katherine. She was married to Alaric Saltzman, the history teacher at the high school, but left him when she became a vampire. She dated John Gilbert, Elena's biological father, in high school. Although Isobel tells Elena not to look for any redeeming qualities in her, she regrets that Elena has been drawn in to the supernatural world and that her daughter is involved with both Salvatore brothers. Because of her desire to keep Elena away from the Salvatore brothers, she tells John Gilbert to ensure both Stefan and Damon are killed along with the tomb vampires and she agrees with John that this isn't the life they want for their daughter. Before she leaves Mystic Falls, she confronts Alaric, telling him that she regrets her decision to become a vampire. Isobel then compels him to move on from her. Stefan tries to track her down but finds John instead. It is then revealed that John Gilbert and Isobel are trying to free Katherine from the tomb. At the end of The House Guest Isobel appears at the front door of the Gilbert house and asks Jenna if Elena is home, greeting Elena when she says her name. It was revealed that Isobel was able to find Klaus and she was compelled by him to find the moonstone and Katherine. After completing Klaus' orders, Isobel apologized to Elena in front of her gravestone, took off her lapis lazuli necklace and burns to death.

Pearl

Kelly Hu, who portrayed vampire and Anna's mother Pearl.

Played by Kelly Hu in season one, Pearl was one of the tomb vampires revealed to be 400 years older than the Salvatore Brothers. She had fallen in love with Johnathan Gilbert the last time she was in town, but he betrayed her upon learning what she was and assisted in her capture after a brief hesitation. The result was her being imprisoned in a tomb with the other vampires for over a century before finally being freed by her daughter Anna, who had fallen very deeply for Johnathan's descendant Jeremy Gilbert. Because of his relation to Johnathan, Pearl does not approve of Anna spending time with Jeremy. Unlike most of the other tomb vampires, she did not seem to bear any ill feelings toward the townspeople and tried unsuccessfully to steer the others away from attempting revenge, saying, "These people are not our enemies; we don't hold grudges and resentments." It is believed she, along with Harper, was staked by John Gilbert, after telling John she gave the device, an artifact extremely harmful to vampires, to Damon. Her death was a devastating blow to Anna, who had waited and worked for one hundred and forty-five years to rescue her. She was a close friend to Katherine Pierce, stating to Damon they were best friends long before coming to Mystic Falls.

John Gilbert

David Anders portrayed Elena's biological father John Gilbert.

David Anders portrayed Jonathan "John" Gilbert in seasons one and two, Grayson Gilbert's younger brother. In their youth, his brother taught him about the vampires through the journals of their ancestor, Jonathan Gilbert. They also inherited a ring each that prevented them from being killed. John had a crush on Isobel Saltzman and he was the one who sent her to Damon Salvatore when she wanted to become a vampire. After her transformation, Isobel found John and they formed a partenship to get their hands on a mysterious invention created by Jonathan Gilbert. John arrived in Mystic Falls for the Founder's Day and was shown as a member of the Founders' Council. However, he knew Damon was a vampire, there had been a tomb under the Fell's Church and he knew about Katherine. He tried to intimidate Damon into helping him find the invention but Damon threatened to kill him and everyone on the Council. Along with Alaric Saltzman, Damon discovered John was keeping an eye on the vampires who had been in the tomb. Soon, he confronts Pearl about her possession of the invention but Pearl has already given it to Damon. When Isobel returns to town, John finally gets the invention at which time it is revealed Isobel and John are working for Katherine and they are planning to kill the tomb's vampires. Unofficially, their goal is to kill the Salvatore brothers and save Elena from suffering in a life filled with vampires. He was in addition responsible for staking his nephew Jeremy's girlfriend Anna's mother Pearl, who was a vampire. It is also revealed John is Elena's biological father. He gets his fingers (one of the them with his ring on it) cut off and is stabbed by Katherine, who poses as Elena in order to gain access to the Gilbert house in the season one finale.

In the season two premiere, John is rushed to hospital and is confronted by Stefan and Elena about Katherine's attack on him. Stefan then tells John that Elena does not want him there (this is due to his attitude toward Stefan and all vampires) and he threatens to turn him into a vampire if he does not leave. He packs his bags but it has not been made clear whether he has actually left Mystic Falls or not. However, we do know he gave his ring (which makes the wearer invulnerable to harm from supernatural forces) to Jeremy, as it once belonged to his brother and Jeremy's father, Grayson Gilbert. John later returns to Mystic Falls and tells Jenna that he is Elena's biological father. It is also revealed that he and Isobel are working together to free Katherine. Elena has trouble believing and trusting John, especially after Isobel returns and he invites her into their house. Elena coldly rejects both and then leaves. Isobel then kills John at a party at the Lockwood Mansion, but he is seen wearing his ring and is effectively brought back to life hours later. Upon learning that Isobel has committed suicide, John comes to the conclusion he's no longer wanted anywhere in Mystic Falls and prepares to leave. Elena stops him however, telling him he is the only parent she has left, and she'd like him to stay. Later he goes through with a spell to save Elena from turning into a vampire, in return dying himself. He leaves Elena his ring and a letter saying he would've loved her human or even what he hated most, a vampire.

Mason Lockwood

Played by Taylor Kinney in season two,[2] Mason Lockwood is Richard Lockwood's younger brother and Tyler's uncle. Mason is described as Tyler's cool uncle. Mason is sexy, athletic and possesses an easygoing charm. At the Mystic Falls Carnival, Mason and Stefan arm wrestle and Stefan loses. Damon uses mind control to provoke a carnival worker into fighting Tyler in the hopes Mason would intervene and reveal what he truly is. Mason does intervene and reveals inhuman like agility in the presence of both Stefan and Tyler. Mason is later seen turning into a werewolf during the night of a full moon. He attempted to lock himself in his vehicle, but upon seeing Stefan moving around the outside of it, he broke out and ran off into the woods. After Mason's transformation into a werewolf, he is later seen attacking Caroline in the woods. Stefan intervenes and stops him from possibly killing Caroline. In the next episode he is seen talking with Damon who has discovered his secret. Mason attempts to make friends with Damon, but Damon is not willing, which leads to Mason telling him that he has made an enemy. In Kill or Be Killed Stefan makes an attempt end the conflict between Mason and Damon by trying to make peace with Mason. Mason shakes hands with him, but decides to tell the Sheriff that Stefan and Damon are vampires. After handing them both over he later leaves and finds Caroline in the woods with Elena. He realizes (through some unknown manner) that Caroline is a vampire and threatens to tell her mother. Caroline attempts to attack him, but he threatens to kill Elena. Caroline frees Elena and easily beats Mason. Mason is later seen with Katherine who is asking him about the moon stone. When he tells her he has it, they start kissing. It may be assumed that he knew Caroline was a vampire because Katherine told him. In the episode "Plan B" Mason was captured by Bonnie and Damon in order to find the moonstone before Katherine could get it. After torture by Damon, Mason says Katherine told him she would lift the curse of the werewolf so he wouldn't have to turn anymore, but Damon laughed and told him she would rip his heart out in the end, but insisted he do it himself. Damon then literally rips Mason's heart out, killing him.

Elijah

Played by Daniel Gillies in season two, Elijah is one of the Original vampires, the first ever to exist. The Originals appear to have owned the Moonstone until it was stolen by Katerina Petrova, later known as Katherine Pierce. Elijah appeared in episode eight, Rose. He was contacted by two vampires named Rose and Trevor. Upon reaching them he makes a deal to grant freedom to Rose in exchange for Elena who is the Petrova doppelgänger. He is later seen with Rose's best friend Trevor and he was shown to be so powerful that he chopped his head off with one swing of his hand. He was staked by Damon who along with Stefan came to rescue Elena after she was kidnapped. He is later seen coming back to life and pulling the stake out, showing that the Originals are much more difficult to kill than modern vampires. He is later seen compelling another vampire named Slater to drive a stake through his own heart, demonstrating another very powerful ability the Originals possess. Elijah is the only known vampire so far that can come back to life and cannot be killed by conventional means. He is also the only known vampire that can compel other vampires. In episode ten, The Sacrifice, Elijah works with Luka's father to find Elena. He discovers her location and goes there to confront her. Upon his arrival Elijah discovers three other vampires who came to take Elena. They wanted her because Elena is the doppelgänger and they wanted to hand her to Klaus. Elijah kills all three vampires with ease. He then spares Damon, Rose and Elena. This is due to the fact that Elijah said to Luka's father that he wants to keep Elena safe. In By the Light of the Moon, Elijah appears at Elena's home to make a deal with her. He reveals that Klaus does not trust him, and he has no idea where he is. He wants to use Elena as a way to draw Klaus out of hiding so he can kill him. In return he promises that Elena's friends and family will be kept safe. He is later seen at the tomb where Katherine and Stefan are located. Under his agreement with Elena, Elijah uses Luka and his father to de-spell the tomb so Stefan can leave. Katherine attempts to run, but Elijah stops her and compels her into staying in the tomb so Klaus can have her. Elijah tells Stefan that he will keep his word if Elena keeps hers. In Crying Wolf, it is revealed that his deal did not involve any protection of Elena, and that he plans on sacrificing her himself because sacrificing a doppelgänger will weaken Klaus. In The Dinner Party, Damon attempts to kill him using the ash of the white oak tree and a dagger, but is told by Alaric that the dagger will kill Damon too if he uses it. The dagger must be used by a human, so Alaric himself reluctantly stabs Elijah through the heart with it, "killing" him once again. When the dagger is removed, he comes back to life, determined to wreak vengeance. He is later tricked by Elena when he comes to take her away, and killed once again. His body is placed in the basement dungeon of the Salvatore house and Damon unsuccessfully tries to destroy it with a flame thrower.
He is not seen for several episodes, until Klaus arrives in Mystic Falls after taking over Alaric's body. After trying take him on almost results in Bonnie's death, Elena refuses to let anyone die for her again, and says they will find another way. She is then seen going to the basement of the Salvatore Mansion, pulling the dagger out of Elijah's heart, and thus bringing him back to life. It is revealed that Elijah is actually Klaus's brother, and that their family was the oldest of Vampires to ever exist. He reveals to Elena the actual motive of Klaus's actions, and what curse he aims to break. Elijah then tells Elena of his own motives to kill Klaus; Klaus killed their remaining siblings, and Elijah now wants revenge.
However after the ritual takes place that will lead to Klaus unleashing the wolf-part inside of him, Elijah is momentarily stunned while trying to kill Klaus, who tells him he knows where their siblings' bodies are, and promises to reunite him with them. Elijah then decides to save Klaus so he can see his siblings again, and Elijah helps him recover in the following days. However, once Klaus gets back to his full strength, he double-crosses Elijah by killing him. Elijah is last seen being placed in a coffin that is put in a storage room with the coffins that hold his siblings' bodies, and Klaus keeps his word that he would 'reunite Elijah with his family'.

Luka Martin

Played by Bryton James in season two, Luka moved to Mystic Falls from Louisiana with his father, Dr. Jonas Martin,[2] who seemed to know quite a bit about Bonnie's family heritage when Luka introduces her at the Mystic Grill. Later, Luka saw Bonnie sitting alone at a table and apologized for his father's behavior. He poured some salt out on the table and managed to make it levitate with his hand, before revealing he was a warlock after Bonnie got a vibe from him when she touched his shoulder. They bonded more after this revelation. In The Sacrifice, Bonnie and Luka channeled each other in the schoolyard using Luka's medallions and Bonnie's bracelet and later when Jeremy was trapped in the tomb with Katherine, she attempted to channel him and he seized up, while Jonas tried to revive him. In By the Light of the Moon, Bonnie apologized for nearly killing him and she asked for his help in removing a spell from a talisman. That night, on the roof of a building they performed a spell to destroy the talisman (the moonstone), but Luka later returned home and gave it to Jonas, having tricked Bonnie. In Crying Wolf, Bonnie encountered Luka at the Grill and handed him a drink, but as soon as he ingested it he felt faint and collapsed. Caroline and Jeremy helped bring him back to Caroline's house, where Bonnie used her powers to find out more information. An entranced Luka revealed that Klaus wants to break the sun and the moon curse and that Elena needs to be sacrificed. He also reveals that his sister is being held captive, as Klaus was trying to figure out how to break the spell without the doppelgänger. In The Dinner Party, he confronted Bonnie at the Grill, angry that she did something to him, but he can't remember what it was. In The House Guest, Jonas and he performed a spell which spiritually projects Luka to gain access to the boarding house. He made his way down to the basement dungeon where he tried to remove the dagger from Elijah's chest, but Katherine sees it moving and tried to keep it in. Suddenly, Luka stabbed her with splintered wood from a leg of a chair and when Damon arrived to help her, he used the flame thrower on the area where Luka was trying to pull out the dagger, and his real/physical body was set ablaze as well. Although Jonas rushed to help him, he died from severe burns to his body.
