Oasis were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. Originally composed of vocalist Liam Gallagher, guitarists Noel Gallagher and Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs, bassist Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan and drummer Tony McCarroll,[1] the band released their debut album Definitely Maybe in 1994, the material for which was entirely written by Noel Gallagher.[2] The album topped the UK Albums Chart, and was supported by the release of "Supersonic", "Shakermaker", "Live Forever" and "Cigarettes & Alcohol" as singles.[1] Later in the year, the band released the standalone single "Whatever", which reached number 3 in the UK Singles Chart.[3]

In 1995, Alan White replaced McCarroll in Oasis, and recorded the follow-up to the band's debut album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, released that year.[1] Again, all material was written by Noel Gallagher, although album opener "Hello" was co-credited to Gary Glitter and Mike Leander.[4] The record topped the charts in a number of regions, and as of July 2014 has sold over 22 million copies worldwide.[5] Morning Glory also gave Oasis their first UK Singles Chart number-one in the form of "Some Might Say"; "Don't Look Back in Anger" would also later top the singles chart.[3] In 1997, the band released Be Here Now, which became the third Oasis album in a row to top the UK Albums Chart;[1] singles "D'You Know What I Mean?" and "All Around the World" topped the UK Singles Chart.[3] All songs on the album were written by Noel Gallagher.[6]

In 1999, both Bonehead and Guigsy left the band, leaving the Gallagher brothers and White to record the next Oasis album alone.[1] Standing on the Shoulder of Giants was released in 2000; it was the first Oasis album to feature a song written by Liam Gallagher ("Little James"), the first not to be released by Creation Records (instead by the band's own Big Brother Recordings), and saw Noel Gallagher handling all guitar and bass duties. The album and its lead single "Go Let It Out" both reached number one in the UK.[3] Shortly after the album was recorded, Gem Archer and Andy Bell were brought in to replace the departed members, and remained until the band's breakup in 2009.[1] Heathen Chemistry was released in 2002, featuring more songs written by band members other than Noel Gallagher – one by Archer, one by Bell, and three by Liam Gallagher (including the first single not written by Noel, "Songbird").[7]

White left the band in 2004, with The Who touring drummer Zak Starkey filling in for 2005's Don't Believe the Truth,[1] which again featured songwriting credits for both Gallagher brothers, Archer, and Bell.[8] The compilation album Stop the Clocks was released in 2006, which was followed in 2007 by the documentary film Lord Don't Slow Me Down, in addition to a single of the same name written and sung by Noel Gallagher. Oasis released their final studio album, Dig Out Your Soul, in 2008,[1] which was their first since Definitely Maybe not to spawn a number-one single.[3] The band broke up in 2009 due to tensions between Noel and Liam, and the career-spanning compilation Time Flies... 1994–2009 was released the following year.

Songs

Guitarist and vocalist Noel Gallagher was the primary songwriter in Oasis, and wrote every original track released by the band up until 2000.
Lead vocalist Liam Gallagher wrote a number of songs for Oasis between 2000 and 2009, including the singles "Songbird" and "I'm Outta Time".
After joining the band in 1999, guitarist Gem Archer wrote or co-wrote six songs for Oasis – four album tracks and two B-sides.
Andy Bell replaced original Oasis bassist Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan in 1999 and wrote five songs for the band.
The band recorded cover versions of two Slade songs, "Cum On Feel the Noize" and "Merry Xmas Everybody", both written by Noddy Holder (pictured) and Jim Lea.
The band recorded a cover version of David Bowie's "Heroes" as a B-side for the 1997 single "D'You Know What I Mean?".
For the "All Around the World" single, Oasis covered "Street Fighting Man", written by Mick Jagger (left) and Keith Richards (right) of The Rolling Stones.
Gary Glitter is co-credited as a writer on "Hello" due to its similarity to the song "Hello, Hello I'm Back Again".
Stevie Wonder is co-credited as a writer on "Don't Look Back in Anger" B-side "Step Out", which bears a similarity to his single "Uptight (Everything's Alright)".
