Made in Abyss (Japanese: メイドインアビス, Hepburn: Meido in Abisu) is a manga series by Akihito Tsukushi about a young girl who finds and befriends a humanoid robot and descends with him into the titular Abyss in search for her mother. It has been serialized online via Takeshobo's digital publication Web Comic Gamma since October 2012, and has been collected in six tankōbon volumes. An anime television series adaptation by Kinema Citrus premiered on July 7, 2017.[2]
Plot
The story is centered around an orphan girl named Riko who lives in the town of Ōsu on an island in the sea of Beoluska. The city surrounds a strange, giant hole going deep into the earth, which is commonly called the Abyss. The Abyss harbors artifacts and remnants of a civilization long gone, and is therefore the popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake arduous and dangerous descents into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find. However, the deeper one goes into the Abyss, the more they are afflicted by a progressively fatal malady called the Curse of the Abyss; few who have descended into the lower regions have returned to tell of their experiences.
Riko's goal is to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a master Cave Raider (a White Whistle) and solve the mysteries of the Abyss. One day she explores the caves and discovers a robot named Reg who resembles a human boy.

Main
- Riko (リコ)

- Riko is a trouble-prone 12-year-old girl who wants to emulate her late mother, a legendary Cave Raider named Lyza the Annihilator who disappeared in the Abyss ten years ago. Currently she is a Cave Raider-in-training at the Belchero Orphanage, and as a rookie bears the rank of Red Whistle. She has secretly taken possession of one of her finds, the Star Compass, which she hopes to use in her exploration of the Abyss. Her bad eyesight results from an effect from the Curse of the Abyss, which she caught while her then-pregnant mother went on a descent and Riko was born inside the Abyss.
- Reg (レグ)
- Voiced by: Mariya Ise[3]
- An amnesic robot or cyborg in the shape of a human boy. Initially having no memory of an own name, he was named Regu after a dog Riko used to own. Surprisingly, he could consume organic food despite being classified as a machine. His mechanic arms can shoot and extend to grab hard to reach objects as well as shooting out deadly straight heat beam that can melt objects at a distance.
- Nanachi (ナナチ)
- Voiced by: Shiori Izawa[4]
- A narehate from the surface who was experimented on by a white whistle. She lost part of her humanity while returning from the 6th layer. Her treasure is her friend Mitty who lost all of her humanity.
Belchero Orphanage
- Jiruo (ジルオ) / Leader (リーダ)
- Voiced by: Taishi Murata[4]
- A young assistant instructor ("Moon Whistle") at the Belchero Orphanage, once personally instructed by Riko's mother. While he is stern, he is also extremely perceptive and keen-minded, and behind his seemingly uncaring facade he is a compassionate and honest soul. He is commonly called "Leader" by his students. He is currently in his 20s.

- A white whistle in charge of the seeker camp on the second layer. She is Lyza's teacher and helped her bring back Riko to the surface after she was born.

- A blue whistle and Ozen's assistant.

The manga series has been published by Takeshobo in 5 tankōbon volumes as of December 26, 2016.[5] Seven Seas Entertainment announced during their Anime Expo 2017 panel that they have licensed the manga.[6]

Anime
An anime television series adaptation premiered on July 7, 2017 on AT-X and other channels.[11][12] It is directed by Masayuki Kojima and animated by Kinema Citrus, with Hideyuki Kurata writing scripts and Kazuchika Kise is designing the characters.[2] Miyu Tomita and Mariya Ise are performing both the opening theme "Deep in Abyss" and the ending theme "Tabi no Hidarite, Saihate no Migite", the latter in collaboration with Shiori Izawa.[4] Sentai Filmworks have licensed the series and is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.[13]
