Murali Sharma is an Indian film actor known for his works predominantly in Bollywood, Tollywood, and television. He is widely known for portraying a cop on screen and is considered one of the finest character artistes of his generation across the country.[1][2][3][4][5] Sharma has starred in over sixty feature films, including Telugu, Tamil, Marathi and Malayalam cinema.[6][7] Sharma gained wide recognition in television with Doordarshan's Paltan in which he plays the lead role of Col. R.S. Sajwan. Sharma has appeared in various soap operas such as Guns and Roses, Siddanth, Laagi Tujhse Lagan, Mahayagya, Viraasat, Zindhagi Teri Meri Kahani, Rishtey, Humne lee hain shapath, and Rangeela Ratan Sisodia.[2][3]

In contemporary cinema, he has appeared in critically and commercially successful films such as Maqbool (2003), Main Hoon Na (2004), Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005), Apaharan (2005), Black Friday (2007), Golmaal Returns (2008), Chal Chala Chal (2009), Dabangg (2010), Golmaal 3 (2010), OMG: Oh My God! (2012), Chakravyuh (2012), Baby (2015), Badlapur (2015), Dharam Sankat Mein (2015), ABCD 2 (2015), and Dilwale (2015).[8] Sharma has appeared in Telugu super hits such as Athidi (2007), for which he received the state Nandi Award for Best Villain,[9] Kantri (2008), Oosaravelli (2011), Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum (2012), Yevadu (2013), Gopala Gopala (2015), and Bhale Bhale Magadivoy (2015).

Personal life

Murli Sharma was born in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. He completed his bachelor's degree, and studied acting at the Roshan Taneja Acting School in Mumbai. He is married to actress Ashwini Kalsekar and lives in Mumbai, and Hyderabad. He has two brothers who reside in Mumbai and Bangalore. He is an avid reader. He is fluent in 5 Indian languages including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi and Gujarati.[10][11][12]

Career

Murli Sharma achieved widespread recognition for playing the role of Captain Khan in the 2004 Bollywood superhit movie Main Hoon Na alongside Shahrukh Khan. By 2007, he further established himself by playing important roles in Dhol, Dhamaal, Black Friday in Hindi and Athithi, Kanthri in Telugu. He received a Nandi Award for his dual role of Kaiser/Ajay Shastri in Athithi in 2007. He also made a special appearance in 2008 Bollywood flick Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na. He received acclaim for his roles in Golmaal Returns and Sunday. In 2009, he worked with R. Madhavan on 13B, a Tamil/Hindi/Telugu psychological thriller, in which he played a cop. He played supporting roles in big ticket flicks like Dabangg, Tees Maar Khan and Golmaal 3 in Hindi. 2011 proved to be a memorable year for Murli Sharma as he teamed up yet again with Rohit Shetty for Singham starring Ajay Devgn. Singham became both critically and commercially successful, standing out as one of the highest-grossing films of the year. He also played supporting roles in Oosaravelli, starring Jr. NTR and Dhoni in Telugu. He simultaneously applied himself both to the Hindi and Telugu film industries by playing crucial roles in films like OMG: Oh My God! alongside Mithun Chakraborthy and Paresh Rawal in Bollywood and Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum as Reddyappa/Chakravarthy alongside Rana Daggubati in Tollywood with those being his major releases in the year 2012. In the same year, he ventured into Malayalam cinema for the first time in his career by starring next to Malayalam superstar Mohanlal in Karma Yodha. 2013 too, became a successful year as he worked in films of four languages including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi. 2015 could be marked as a watershed year for the actor as he achieved global success with major roles in Gopala Gopala, Bhale Bhale Magadivoy and Dharam Sankat Mein. He also played crucial roles in Badlapur and ABCD 2 furthering his fan and support base. He also acted in a Tamil movie in that year, Paayum Puli (2015 film), spreading his reach across all languages and helping him achieve a pan India appeal. He also played cameos in Dilwale and Baby while proving his mettle in pulling off comic roles in the latter mentioned. Sharma also made a guest appearance in critically acclaimed film Gour Hari Dastaan by Anant Mahadevan without charging any remuneration. In 2016, Sharma has achieved furthermore success by appearing in movies like Krishna Gaadi Veera Prema Gaadha, Jai Gangajal, Savithri, Sanam Teri Kasam and Wazir in all important roles.

Trivia

1) Murli Sharma is fluent in 6 languages in all which include Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Hindi, English and Gujarati.

2) In the 2015 Tollywood hit Gopala Gopala starring Daggubati Venkatesh and Pawan Kalyan, which is the remake of 2011 Hindi film OMG: Oh My God!, he played the role of an honest lawyer (originally portrayed by Om Puri). Ironically, he himself played the role of a corrupt politician in the original flick.

3) He is an avid reader and likes to spend his time reading books.

4) He made a guest appearance in the 2015 biographical movie Gour Hari Dastaan by Anant Mahadevan without charging any fee expressing love for the project and wanting to be a part of it.

Awards

He received the Nandi Award for the Best Villain in 2007 for Athidhi.
