Parliamentary elections were due to be held in Bulgaria in 2018 at the end of the four-year term of the National Assembly. However, early elections may be called following the resignation of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov. Borisov resigned following the defeat of Tsetska Tsacheva, the candidate of his GERB party, in the November 2016 presidential elections.[1][2]

Background

In 2016 the GERB candidate, Tsetska Tsacheva lost to the presidential election to BSP-backed Rumen Radev and Prime Minister Boyko Borisov subsequently resigned, possibly triggering a new election.[2]

Electoral system

The 240 members of the National Assembly are elected by two methods from 31 multi-member constituencies. One member is elected from each constituency by first-past-the-post voting, whilst the remaining 209 members are elected using closed list proportional representation. Seats are allocated using the largest remainder method, although parties must pass an electoral threshold of at least 4% of the national vote to win a seat.[3]
