Shea Couleé is the stage name of Jaren Merrell,[1] an American drag queen and musician best known for appearing on the ninth season of RuPaul's Drag Race.[2][3]

Early life and education

Merrell was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Plainfield, and graduated with a degree in costume design from Columbia College in 2011.[4][5]

Career

Couleé competed on the ninth season of RuPaul's Drag Race, winning four challenges and eventually finishing in joint third/fourth place.[2][3] Before appearing on the show, she performed at various venues in Chicago, including Roscoe's, Berlin, Double Door, and Hydrate.[4][6] She performed as part of the Werq the World Tour, following RuPaul's Drag Race.[7]

In 2017, Couleé released three music videos “COCKY” on the same day of June 22 to promote her debut EP, Couleé-D.[8] Couleé co-directed the music videos, and co-produced the EP.[9][10] Azealia Banks and Couleé announced plans to release a studio collaboration.[11] She also co-produced, directed and starred in her own film Lipstick City in July 7, 2017.[12]

In September 2018, Couleé performed as a background dancer behind Christina Aguilera for Opening Ceremony's Spring 2019 collection, with other Drag Race alumni.[13]

Couleé photographed with Farrah Moan for Manny MUA's Lunar Beauty palette.[14]

Personal life

Couleé identifies as gay.[15] Merrell uses singular they pronouns when out of drag[16] and goes by she and her while in drag.[17] Couleé's drag daughter is Kenzie Couleé.[18] Merrell (with Moan) were attacked by a woman at a kebab shop in Newcastle in April 2018.[19]
