Sulaymaniyah Governorate (Kurdish: Silêmanî ([محافظة السليمانية As Sulaymānīyah] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help), Turkish: Süleymaniye, ) is a governorate of Iraq, within Iraqi Kurdistan. Its capital is the city of Sulaymaniyah.[2]
The governorate is surrounded by mountains (Goyzha, Azmir, Glazarda and Piramagrun). When it was established, under the Baban (1649-1850) dynasty in 1781 during the reign of Mahmud Pasha Baban, it was known by its former name "Namo" and later changed to Sulaymānīya.
During the Iraq war, the governorate was occupied by US led coalition forces. On May 30, 2007, Sulaymānīyah was handed over to local Kurdish authorities by Coalition forces as part of a three province handover.
