I grabbed some interesting looking Cochrane reviews on this subject. These all discuss the therapy for specific problems. I am unable to find a source which describes the theory or history of the practice in general.

Antimicrobial prophylaxis → Antibiotic prophylaxis – It is better to say "antibiotic" than "antimicrobial" considering how this term is used here and in other Wikipedia articles. Sources usually say "antibiotic" also. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:22, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comment There is a previous discussion about this at Talk:Antibiotics#This_article_should_be_named_.22Antibiotics.22. I just cited some typical medical literature in the section above which uses both terms, but more often "antibiotic". There is a distinction between the two terms, and there could be two articles for the distinct concepts, but right now we only have enough content to talk about this generally, so "antibiotic" is the better term. Most other Wikipedia articles are using the term "antibiotic prophylaxis", so this main article should align with them. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:25, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
