Page move
[edit]User:Kj1595 made a request to move this page to Antigonea. I've asked for this move to be reversed, because I think it deserves some discussion. On the one hand, "Antigonea" is the official name of the site in Albania. On the other hand, I'm not sure that it is the WP:COMMONNAME. The usual English names are "Antigonia" and "Antigoneia" (depending on whether one is using Latinisation or more accurate Greek transliteration - WP generally prefers the former). Examples include Zachos 2006 (cited in article); Cohen 1996 p. 75.
Whichever spelling is chosen, I think the article needs a disambiguator, to avoid confusion with the many other ancient cities of the same name (see Antigonia). I admit "in Chaonia" is not a very good disambiguator, since it's a pretty obscure place. "(Epirus)" might be better - per Cohen 1996. Furius (talk) 21:25, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
- Are Antigonia or Antigoneia the more usual forms of the name, though? The name Antigonea, has been documented in written historical accounts as early as 1828 in the work of english scholar John Antony Cramer titled "A Geographical and Historical Description of Ancient Greece" here. In the "Journal of Roman Studies" published in 1971 by N. G. L. Hammond here. In the Bradt Travel Guides in 2012 by Gillian Gloyer here. In Albanian archaeological studies, it is only referred to as Antigonea. I am in favor of the title being changed to Antigonea (Epirus). Kj1595 (talk) 22:34, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
- Antigonia: [1] (1803), Translation of Livy, Translation of Polybios, A Journey through Albania (1971), Shepherd's Historical Atlas (1976).
- Antigoneia: N. G. L. Hammond (!), Griffith, and Walbank A History of Macedonia (1972); Garouphalias Pyrrhus (1979); Peter Green, Alexander to Actium 1990, Cambridge Ancient History 7.1 (1994), Cohen The Hellenistic Settlements in Egypt (1996), J Mitchell "Keeping the Demons out of the House: The Archaeology of Apotropaic Strategy and Practice in Late Antique Butrint and Antigoneia" in Objects in Context, Objects in use (2008). (This is an archaeological study and so is Zachos 2006, mentioned above) Furius (talk) 10:41, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
