Asai/Azai
[edit]Please do not change this article's content or title to "Azai" without some sort of naming vote. "Asai" is the more common currect pronunciation for "浅井". Though many history books use Azai, many others use Asai; neither can therefore be said to be more correct. LordAmeth 11:23, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
- Can we get some more clarifications on the naming? The Japanese wikipedia only lists あざい as a reading. I just think we need some agreement, because Asai Nagamasa and other articles use both readings. Douggers (talk) 12:36, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
- Hrm. The books I've used, primarily those by Sansom and Turnbull, have consistently used only the Asai spelling. I unfortunately do not know the origins of the name in more detail... as Alex K indicates below, there's some differentiation to be made between Asai and Azai lands in different provinces, a detail I know nothing about. I do know that 浅 is read as asa in the clan/family name 浅野 (Asano), and that outside of this Asai/Azai clan issue, I have never seen it read as aza. But, in the end, I don't know from any definitive Japanese primary source or anything like that... LordAmeth (talk) 22:43, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
- I haven't been able to find any sources, either, but I think "Azai" is the more correct reading in this case. There is a town in Shiga Prefecture (home of the 浅井氏) that uses "Azai" as a reading (Nishiazai, Shiga, [Homepage]). Additionally, the jawiki uses "Azai" for the clan name and all members. The reading "Asai" seems to be more modern (ja:浅井健一 and 株式会社浅井). Douggers (talk) 01:26, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
- Alright. Sounds good to me. LordAmeth (talk) 11:31, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Azai is correct
[edit]You read old books. In nowadays Japanese academia usage of the name "Azai" is much more common than "Asai". Asai is the name of lands in the Kanto region that has no relation to Azai lands in Omi country (Shiga prefecture). But if you like Asai more than Azai, let it be so. As far as I know using "Asai" is not a mistake. Alex K2006.8.12 1:31
