John the Baptist
[edit]The article currently says: "The first baptisms occurred on May 15, 1829, when Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery baptized each other in the Susquehanna River near Harmony, Pennsylvania shortly after receiving the Aaronic priesthood from John the Baptist."
I changed this to: "The first Mormon baptisms occurred on May 15, 1829, when Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery baptized each other in the Susquehanna River near Harmony, Pennsylvania, allegedly shortly after receiving the Aaronic priesthood from John the Baptist."
It was reverted by an anonymous user with the explanation "WP:CLAIM".
I don't see how WP:CLAIM applies to this case. The current version implies that Smith and Cowdery received the Aaronic priesthood from John the Baptist. That clearly is Mormon point of view that is only supported by claims in Mormon literature. That Smith and Cowdery baptized each other is plausible; that they met John the Baptist, who died about 1800 years before that is somewhat doubtful.
Any other thoughts? --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 21:32, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
- I added "According to the account in Joseph Smith—History 1:68", which should be neutral. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:43, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

- Weak support They look about the same to me, but as the only article I could find to compare it to was Baptism in early Christianity, I go Support for uniformity. ~Adjwilley (talk) 16:07, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

Merger proposal
[edit]I suggest merging Rebaptism (Mormonism) into this article. Neither articles are that large, and don't anticipate them becoming that much larger. Epachamo (talk) 20:50, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- Merger complete. Klbrain (talk) 21:34, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
