Summary
[edit]I suggest to leave out the starting times, match numbers, quarter scores and stats to the respective tournament articles since this'll get pretty long. --Howard the Duck 07:21, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
- I suggest we eliminate this article, or most of the content in it, altogether. If you compare it to the article on Football at the 2008 Games (and its separate articles on the Men's and Women's tournaments), it is far more redundant. MrArticleOne (talk) 01:35, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- Let's keep this article. Basketball is not shown in full on TV, and this is the only site that gives me complete updates. While the US-Germany game was in 1st quarter on TV, it was already on 3rd quarter here. Also the China-Greece game wasn't shown on TV, and I updated myself by reloading this page. If similar articles involving other sports are not as complete as this one, it's their problem.
Who says that?
[edit]Now, July 20th at 20:30 (CEST) who has decided which teams will be the Qualified A, B and C for the Men Olympic Tournament??? In the official FIBA web site is nothing about wroten yet! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.214.183.40 (talk) 18:31, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
one point for losing a game?
[edit]i checked the FIBA site and they do actually give 1 point to losers, and 2 to the winners of a match... That sure seems bizarre to me... not that it makes much sense having points to begin with, the way i see it. jonosphere (talk) 19:04, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- It's because you get 0 points if you lose by forfeit. MrArticleOne (talk) 19:44, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
image
[edit]The article Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics uses a similar infobox as basketball, and recently the image in the infobox of the Beijing Games was removed, and a note was added to the infobox template that the official games image should not be used. Basketball at the Olympics still use it. Don't know if it's best to remove the image from the basketball infobox, or re-add the image to the volleyball infobox.Bib (talk) 20:27, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- I've removed before I read this comment. Be 'bold and choose whichever. IMO, it should be removed since the Official Games logo is non-free. It should only be used on the Summer Olympics and the Dancing Emblem articles. --haha169 (talk) 06:17, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- Great reply. Thanks. Bib (talk) 08:32, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- I've used the official icon they've used. –Howard the Duck 19:03, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Colors Error?
[edit]I believe that someone has jumped ahead in highlighting teams that have been eliminated or advanced to the next round. For instance, Argentina has only played 2 games thus far and has not been eliminated yet they are already highlighted in red. If the tournament ended today they would be out, but this could be confusing to people so someone needs to update this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.222.172.114 (talk) 14:10, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
I agree...someone has jumped the gun. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.17.174.18 (talk) 15:25, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Again... Australia isn't qualified yet. For example, LIT beats CRO, IRI beats ARG, you get AUS, ARG and CRO with 2 wins, RUS with one. AUS, ARG and CRO don't play each other, so they can all lose, and get a 4-way tie with AUS, ARG, CRO and RUS having 2 wins each. I'm taking that off for now...Fd88ar (talk) 06:08, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Please do not use colors for Group A yet! Each team of these five teams (Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Iran, Russia) may still advance and may still got eliminated! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.84.218.204 (talk) 09:15, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Medal round error
[edit]CMJMEM, don't plug in the 3rd and 4th place teams from Groups A & B in the men's tournament until we figure out which teams those will be! Australia can still finish 3rd with a win and a Croatia loss. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.134.74.183 (talk) 18:11, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
This guy has been constantly jumping the gun, thinking it is appropriate for Wikipedia to consider teams eliminated when they still have a chance (however absurdly small) to advance.Alanmjohnson (talk) 18:50, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Many mistakes
[edit]This page is showing why I think it was foolish to have 3 separate articles: Basketball at the 2008 Olympics, Men's Basketball at the 2008 Olympics, and Women's Basketball at the 2008 Olympics. We can't effectively keep an eye on it all the time and there are all sorts of problems. Since when is USA guaranteed to advance to the Gold Medal Game, irrespective of the outcome of any of the other Knockout Round games (of course, they aren't, but the current chart shows them there already). This page adds virtually nothing to Wikipedia other than an opportunity for vandalism. MrArticleOne (talk) 06:09, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
- I agree. Why not eliminate everything in the Men and Women sections of the main article except for the link to their specific articles? The main page can still have the qualifying, schedule, flag bearer, and medal info. No one will spend much time vandalizing those sections.Alanmjohnson (talk) 16:24, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
- Any such effort has my blessing, although I don't care to wrangle with it personally. MrArticleOne (talk) 00:45, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Take a look at UEFA Euro 2008, UEFA Euro 2008 Group A and UEFA Euro 2008 knockout stage. Each article has the same information but differing depth. In this article, the prelim round games scores are only listed, while on the men's and women's articles, there are quarter scores and team highs for points, rebounds and assists. Not to say what was done on the Euro 2008 articles were correct, but there was consensus to do that, and that consensus was applied here.
And every Olympic sporting event article has an article like this. This article won't be deleted unless "basketball at the 2008 summer Olympics" didn't happen. –Howard the Duck 03:25, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- But compare to the Football at the 2008 Summer Olympics page, which doesn't have game scores or even group standings. That's what it ought to look like. MrArticleOne (talk) 03:27, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- That article didn't even tell me what is currently happening on both tourneys. Is that a good thing or bad? –Howard the Duck 03:47, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- Probably bad, but it indicates the worthlessness of having all 3. If we absolutely must have all 3 as a matter of form, that's how I'd do it, because it minimizes the foolish repetitiveness. MrArticleOne (talk) 04:53, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- But not everything is repeated. Only the essentials are repeated. It's like United States#History, History of the United States and History of the United States (1776–1789) where the Declaration of Independence, Washington as the first president, etc. are mentioned in all characters. –Howard the Duck 05:32, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- Unlike the history of the United States, the scope of this is sufficiently limited that it can and should be expressed without repetitiveness. MrArticleOne (talk) 05:36, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- With size regulations, you can only fit so many in a limited space, hence splitting the articles. There's even a proposal to have a Basketball at the 2008 Summer Olympics - Men's basketball preliminary round Group A since Basketball at the 2008 Summer Olympics - Men is getting long already. –Howard the Duck 07:15, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Medal Round
[edit]The "Medal Round" (which should really be displayed as "Medal round" if you'd really insist) stands for the gold and bronze medal games ONLY. Quarterfinals and semifinals aren't "medal rounds." You don't win medals by winning in the QF and SF. –Howard the Duck 13:37, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
it should be medal round.knock out round look very 1st gradeish. CMJMEM (talk) 16:40, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- Medal round is kindergarten. Since it is assumed that if you win, you'd win medals. You don't win medals in the quarterfinals. –Howard the Duck 16:58, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- PS, it's not knockout round but knockout stage, since if you lose, you're knocked out of the competition. –Howard the Duck 16:59, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
here a 7 exampals of it being called the medal round. find me some were it is called the knockout stage.
CMJMEM (talk) 17:13, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- Go check my user talk page, there like 300+ instances of such. –Howard the Duck 17:25, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Very Serious Error
[edit]Spain is NOT the current Men's Basketball champion, as erroneously claimed on this page, under the column "Automatic Qualifiers". The basketball gold medal for Men in the 2004 Games (Greece) went to Argentina, and not to Spain as claimed here. For reference see

You're a tool. Spain is the current basketball World Champion, the FIBA World Championships are different to the Olympics. It is the FIBA World Champion that automatically qualifies and not the previous Olympic's champion. For reference see:
