Article improvement notes

[edit]

I'm removing this section, questionable. Will move back after revisions:

Because of Baytown's industry, it serves as a central city for several communities in the Eastern region of Greater Houston including the eastern portion of Harris County, western Chambers County, and south-western Liberty County. Also, the city is a primary city of the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area.

Removing this also. Postoak (talk) 03:47, 8 November 2009 (UTC) On Friday the 13th, July 2007 the theater was destroyed when a woman driving a Ford Taurus passed out at the wheel and drove into the side of the building and came to rest in the middle of the arena theatre stage. The theater is currently operating out of a donated space across the street from Ross S. Sterling High School at 4328 Hugh Echols Blvd. The theater also has plans to perform at Lee College's new Performing Arts Center.[reply]

Notable people

[edit]

Comment: For what it's worth I'd tend to argue that a more strict filter should be used for the list of Notable people. My personal opinion is that such lists should be restricted to

  • People long gone who have been established by major writers/commentators as either legendary figures (i.e. having widespread fame) or extremely important historically at a level far outside the community.
  • People that are so famous that a large portion of the readers have already heard of them.

Busey and Cagle arguably qualify under the second criterion. I'm not sure any of the others really do.

US Steel Plant

[edit]

The Wikipedia article on the Trans Alaska Pipeline [1] states the pipe came from Japan, as do some articles I've seen elsewhere. As far as I know, the 42 inch pipe the mill was making when I worked there in 1979 was the largest size produced. --78.101.173.57 (talk) 20:04, 28 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

June, 2013 The TransAlaskan Pipeline was completed in 1977 and the Texas Works DSAW Pipe Mill started operation in late 1977. Pipe production ranged from 30" to 48" diameter. The 48" pipe was difficult for the antiquated equipment which was relocated and somewhat updated from Orange, Texas. However the Baytown Texas Works Pipe Mill with much difficulty and inspection, did produce the 48" heavy wall pipe used for the Stragetic Oil Reserve located in Louisiana. The 40" to 42" pipe was easier for the mill to make with occasional production levels reaching 200 finished pipes per production shift. The Texas Works was closed soon after the United Steel Workers decided to go on strike. Goosecreek5 (talk) 14:46, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Anonymous edits on old town names

[edit]

I reverted the anonymous good-faith edits regarding Pelly's original name being "Pelly Junction" and now "Pelly Side" as well as the original Baytown now being called "Old Baytown". The reference that is there doesn't directly support this and, searching around, I don't find any citations to clearly back up these characterizations. Since WikiProject Houston is trying to stabilize this article to bring it to GA, I would suggest that sections that are well sourced should not have new info introduced unless it is backed up by sources.

Alaska pipeline

[edit]

Contrary to local folklore, the Baytown pipe mill did not make a single foot of the Alaska pipeline. Due to numerous problems the pipe was actually made by Sumitomo. I work there now, and that story is part of the official history of the plant told to visitors.
