"Usually male"

Looking after a wine cellar was a role for the most trusted servants only

One additional aspect not mentioned in this article, however, is that a person in charge of wine, etc. was so respected because it was a position for the most entrusted and loyal people only as in the past centuries spiking wine was one of the most popular methods of poisoning.
