– Captain Ahab, the Moby-Dick character, is a clear Primary topic (over 40 incoming article links, not including the ~50 Ahab (Moby-Dick) redirects, ~191,000 Google hits for "Captain Ahab Moby-Dick") which predates the other two titles by ~150 years and inspired their names: first, Capitaine Achab (~40 incoming links, including ~30 from {{Moby-Dick}}, 24-41,000 Google hits depending on whether "film" is included), a short film based on the Moby-Dick character with a native primary title that doesn't even match the DAB, and secondly Captain Ahab (band) (17 incoming links, ~87,000 Google hits) a pop band with questionable notability. --Animalparty-- (talk) 03:19, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bigger game: Move Moby Dick (Moby-Dick) to Moby Dick?

[edit]

Friends;

Having made this sensible move, shouldn't we follow Animalparty's good example and strong reasoning to move Moby Dick (Moby-Dick) to Moby Dick? Perhaps Alza08, GregKaye, Egsan Bacon,Softlavender, and Necrothesp would like to comment on that TalkPage.ch (talk) 18:00, 18 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Captain Ahab (Moby-Dick)Captain Ahab – consensus on move see Talk Page January 17; not allowed "Page That Name already exists" – ch (talk) 04:11, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 06:35, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • objection to speedy clearly this is why regular move requests exists. The target is a page that is not a redirect. This should be a normal move request, informing the target page of the move request as well, for any watchers of that page. -- 70.51.200.101 (talk) 05:45, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. I'm trying to figure out what is happening here. I think the nom here is trying to say that there was previous consensus to move (see #Requested move 8 January 2015 above), but it appears to have never been carried out. Looks like there was a non-admin closure by User:Sunrise, but the last paragraph of WP:RMNAC appears to have never been followed (such as marking the relevant redirects with {{db-move}} or requesting an admin's help directly). This procedure on WP:RMNAC is required because there is no central archive of closed RM discussions that admins can easily reference -- it's just a bot adding or removing links on WP:RM. For interested editors, my response is here. The part that's relevant to this discussion is that there was a previous consensus to move, but the page was not in fact moved. Also, FWIW, it seems that the TR objection is from an editor who was unaware of the previous consensus. Sunrise (talk) 09:37, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've moved it, thanks. DrKiernan (talk) 12:59, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ahab - "such vital strength... in his Egyptian chest"?

[edit]

Somewhere in the book, refering to Ahab, it is stated "such vital strength ... in his Egyptian chest". Does this mean he was Egyptian? I can't find any sources to confirm this, maybe I am wrong in understanding this. Wiki-uk (talk) 18:50, 8 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Earlier, in chapter ch 31, Ishmael had described Ahab as being like a pyramid.

Any WP:RS connecting Ahab to Napoleon via 1812, (as there are to Napoleon and Andrew Jackson)?

[edit]

https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/english/currentstudents/undergraduate/modules/fulllist/second/en213/term2/moby_dick_and_the_ideology_of_free_labor.pdf is a scholarly paper that briefly mentions a comparison between Ahab and Napoleon, while suggesting the comparison may really be to President Andrew Jackson. And quite likely this can go in under some sub-section 'comparison to modern leaders', and maybe I'll try to add that myself eventually (tho as I may not bother other editors should feel free to try it themselves). But I'm rather more interested in the fact that, using the usual code A=1,b=2...H=8, Ahab becomes 1812, the year 'mad' Napoleon tried to destroy huge Russia and destroyed himself (and his armies) in the process, much as 'mad' Ahab tried to destroy huge Moby Dick and destroyed himself (and his crew) in the process. This could of course just be coincidence, but, whether it is or not, it seems quite likely that some scholar has already got a paper on it somewhere, tho, if so,it is not yet easily found online.So if any editor can find such a Reliable Source reference somewhere, it could usefully be added to the article. And if none exists yet, leaving this here may eventually inspire some scholar to produce such a paper (or get one of their students to do so), which can then hopefully get mentioned in our article. Biography

[edit]

This is just awful. The whole biography is full of quotes directly taken from Moby Dick (unattributed) that are slapped together in a way that makes the section incoherent. 162.1.129.147 (talk) 22:13, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
