Redirect

[edit]

Is Mandelin notable apart from the Mother 3 fan translation? Are there any sources that discuss him in depth apart from Mother 3 sources? That's why I BOLDly redirected his article there. The IP revert's edit summary was, "None of the information I was looking for could be found in the redirect. So what's the point?" I'm not sure what other information this bio article is meant to hold when RS haven't published on him personally. czar  21:28, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, his "day job" is a Funimation translator for notable dubs like Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Attack on Titan. -AngusWOOF (talk) 18:05, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Right—does that have any coverage in RS, or is it only on his role in the M3 translation? WP:42 czar  18:49, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the RS are primaries, that is, you can look at the closing credits / cite videos of the various shows or catalogs for what he has translated, assuming we don't use his resume for WP:USERG reasons. Here are some other sources:
  • Gama Sutra who did an interview with Clyde, but wrote secondary source on his background and Funimation works: [1]
  • Sci-Fi Japan mentions that he translated for Case Closed [2]
  • Funimation's blog on Happy International Translation Day where they introduce Clyde and other translators on staff [3] mentions Summer Wars.

RS implies that they're secondary, independent sources. His employer's site would be a self-published sources. Passing mentions don't count towards the GNG. I believe my point stands. I'm working on an EarthBound featured topic and I'd like to bring all of the associated articles up to snuff. There doesn't appear to be enough independent articles on Mandelin as an individual to justify a separate article. czar  19:46, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, there is WP:AUTHOR #3: "The person has created, or played a major role in co-creating, a significant or well-known work, or collective body of work, that has been the subject of an independent book or feature-length film, or of multiple independent periodical articles or reviews." if you want him to be notable because of Mother 3 fan translation. Otherwise the passing mentions in Gama Sutra and Scifi Japan are proof that he worked on the stuff that isn't coming from primary sources. -AngusWOOF (talk) 19:56, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Right—I'm aware of the notability criteria (and to be quite honest, I would like to have this article be beefy and useful), but I'm not finding enough reliable sources to justify his own dedicated article. That's the dilemma. I'm suggesting a redirect (that is, for now, and can always be expanded if more sources arrive). czar  21:01, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I would go back to "cite episode" and show in the published media, which isn't self-publishing like the Funimation blog or his website/resume, that he is credited for Translation in that program, and consider WP:ABOUTSELF. He's not the one who's pasting his own name in the closing credits, so that's not self-pub. With WP:AUTHOR, as long as you have enough about Mother 3/Earthbound from the multiple independent periodicals/reviews, then that should work. By the anime works alone, he would be in the crew list along with production assistants and coordinators that wouldn't have the top coverage like the director, writer or producer. The redirect would work as well, as that keeps the focus on the Mother 3 article. -AngusWOOF (talk) 22:11, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just had another thought, should the Mother 3 fan translation article redirect to Clyde Mandelin? This happens for authors/creators who are strongly identified to their work, yet the work itself isn't notable enough to warrant its own article. -AngusWOOF (talk) 16:01, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you take a look at those sources, their subject is the fan translation and not Mandelin. (This was my original point.) czar  16:21, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well you can merge it with Mother 3 fan translation since this would be much like merging a band member to his or her band page. He does have notability as an anime translator but at this point there are hardly any secondary source articles such as reviews that pinpoint his name to review his work there, not to mention any that would make him any more notable than his peers. The only ones I have seen are the primary sources / cite episodes that prove that he worked on those series in that capacity. Again, I would be more inclined to push this if he were positioned as a producer, director/writer, or composer. -AngusWOOF (talk) 22:13, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
