Also according to other sources, e.g. BNF and AKL. RKD on the other hand gives "1894-06-25". I've changed it to May 25, 1894 for now. Cheers, --Marsupium (talk) 13:46, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Connie and Wally

[edit]

Connie and Wally were not married. I knew them from 1950 until they died. They had a common-law marriage. Connie was ferocious and independent, contemptuous of social conventions. She taught my brother to spit at the end of a meal (as, supposedly, a Muslim gesture of approval for the host, but really just to annoy my mother). She gave me my first drink at age 15 (a Vermouth Cassis), probably again to annoy my mother.

Connie died not because of darkroom chemicals (she had a darkroom in the house, but didn't use it every day). She died of lung cancer probably because she smoked like a train, right up to her death. I rarely saw her without a cigarette in her mouth.

Some feminists, who want Connie to be an icon, have claimed that Connie was kept in the shadows by Wally. Maybe that's true, but I never saw it. She continued to work in the darkroom and was never afraid to stand up to him ("Oh, Wall, that's bullshit..." I heard more than once). They energized each other. Wally worshipped her. Connie chose to stay with him, not as an enabler, but as an energizer. And, without having actually witnessed more than their social interactions in the little ice house, I can say that I never met a couple who had more electricity between them.

People speak of "larger than life" characters, but only Connie fit that description for me, looking back on 70 years or so. She was, beyond her art, the most vivid, authentic, principled, forceful person I ever knew.

None of this is sufficient information for Wikipedia, since it is all POV. But maybe it could lead some to investigate some of the facts further. I am delighted to see this page that largely honors her for the extraordinary artist and person that she was. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:646:8501:FD27:EDB7:6BEA:127A:AAB4 (talk) 21:39, 4 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
