[edit]As I recall, upon his retirement on June 1, 1973, General Jones was awarded the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, which in terms of precedence comes before the Legion of Merit and the DFC. I was an airman assigned to the public affairs office at Patrick AFB at the time. This should probably be added to this article as the source for his decorations was an official USAF biography dated Feb. 1973, prior to his retirement. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RZALON (talk • contribs) 23:31, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

Hilts
[edit]Looking for sourcing to substantiate the view that Jones inspired the Hilts character. This article points to another prisoner. This article points to yet another! We clearly need better sourcing. There are some superficial-looking Hollywood books referring to Jones but given the conflict in sourcing I'd like to see one directly quoting a person involved in the production stating that Jones was the model for, or among the models for, the Steve McQueen-Virgil Hilts character. A Youtube video is insufficient. Coretheapple (talk) 14:48, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
Here is another. That makes four including Jones and I'm still looking. Apparently every American involved in the escape has been referred to as a model for Hilts. Coretheapple (talk) 14:55, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
