Denis Ten and his first successful quad in competition

[edit]

There has been a series of editing and re-editing concerning his quad jump attempt in the 2008-2009 season paragraph. To ease the tension among the editors, I searched for references on this matter. I found three interview articles on his quad jump status, which may be of some help to stop unnecessary future editing on this subject.

  • A 2009 June news article by Paula Slater from GoldenSkate.com: The corresponding text is "Ten also would like to add the quad toe to his arsenal. He landed the jump already at the end of 2008, but then had to reduce his practice of the quad, as he got injured."[1] From the context of the article, it seems that he had landed quad jumps in practice.
  • A 2011 September news article by Reut Golinsky from AbsoluteSkating.com: The text in interest is "I also practice a quad now and I already land it sometimes, it's still early to add it to my program, but we reserved a place for it there, so maybe towards the end of the season I will try it in the competition."[2] It seems that he had not tried a quad jump during a competition yet.
  • A 2012 October news article by Reut Golinsky from AbsoluteSkating.com: Mr. Golinsky mentioned : "Last season you succeeded with a quadruple jump in competition."[3]

I searched through the available protocols of international competitions from 2008 till 2012 seasons for Denis Ten's quad jump attempt. The first time he landed a successful (fully rotated) quad in an ISU sanctioned competition was ISU GP Skate Canada International 2011, during his free skating.[4] He might have landed a successful quad in local or summer competitions earlier, but the corresponding protocols are usually not available. In my opinion, it would be more appropriate mentioning his first successful quad in an ISU sanctioned event in the 2011-2012 season paragraph, rather than including his quad efforts during private practice sessions in the 2008-2009 season paragraph.

I don't object to the content being in the article. My concern is that if it is the article that it is properly sourced and doesn't break any other policies. The majority of the times this info has been added, it was completely unsourced. The latest time, a note was added. The first Google search result with said title/website was a forum which does not meet Wikipedia standards of reliable source. Given reliable sources, such as those Seameetsmountain listed above, then info is fine. However, it needs to be reworded since the previous version would be a copyright violation of the golden skate article. Cheers, Kirin13 (talk) 07:49, 25 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
addendum: I agree with Seameetsmountain that the "first successful quad in an ISU sanctioned event" is more important than quads in practice. Though I don't object practice information also being included as long as it's sourced and such information doesn't overtake the article. However, to source "first", a news article is needed – just using protocols would be original research. Cheers, Kirin13 (talk) 08:48, 25 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If a corresponding news article cannot be found on his first successful quad landing, then it can be simply said that he landed quad jumps successfully in competition during the 2011-2012 season. This is just a suggestion. Regards, Seameetsmountain (talk) 09:04, 25 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
