Hymenoptera
[edit]User:Lusotitan recently reverted two edits by Cnilep with this edit. Lusotian's concern, that Diceratops may refer to either Nedoceratops (a dinosaur genus) or Syzeuctus (a genus of wasps) is a valid one. But as MOS:DAB describes, there are certain norms for disambiguation pages on Wikipedia. One of these is that only articles, or redlinks that are currently linked from articles, should be included in a DAB. Because the article Diceratops (insect) does not exist and no other articles mention it, a Wikipedia reader cannot get any information about the genus from the DAB, or indeed from Wikipedia. Another norm for disambiguation pages is that piped links such as [[Nedoceratops|Diceratops]]
should be avoided. That is so that a Wikipedia reader clicking Diceratops will not be shocked to end up at Nedoceratops, among other rationale. It also helps editors disambiguate links quickly.
The version that Lusotitan reverted linked to Data related to Diceratops at Wikispecies, but a reader would need to go down to the See also section and click on the box to find that information.
Rather than impose what I think is best, I will ask Lusotitan and others to comment here. Perhaps we can come up with a better solution. Cnilep (talk) 01:40, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
- I agree with @Lusotitan:, the page here is to point people to the multiple animal taxa that have had Diceratops as a name. Not to act as a ceratopsian navigation page.--Kevmin § 01:52, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
- The Wikispecies template might have potential in aiding with the problem, but the issue is that it just uses the name, without clicking on it you still have no idea the name also refers to an insect. Would it be poor conduct to just insert a redlink to [[Diceratops (insect)|Diceratops]] in the Nedoceratops article to resolve the issue? Lusotitan (Talk | Contributions) 01:54, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
- If it's a notable thing, I see nothing wrong with adding a mention of it to the appropriate article for that. bd2412 T 02:19, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
- Diceratura diceratops exists, but may be a different and irrelevant insect. Certes (talk) 09:40, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, entirely unrelated. We could just create an article for the valid genus Syzeuctus and then link that here, mentioning it has a synonym named Diceratops. Lusotitan (Talk | Contributions) 19:49, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

Given that the above has gone stale, I have implemented a solution to remove the disambiguation tag from this article by making it a stub. It loses none of the information but no longer has to comply with MOS:DAB. If editors above would be kind enough to add categories then that would be helpful. - That seemed like a reasonable solution, but apparently someone objected. I've had another go: if anyone more knowledgeable would care to clean it up, I would certainly not object. Cnilep (talk) 09:05, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
- It doesn't really work as an article, it's about two completely different things at once. Lusotitan (Talk | Contributions) 00:52, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
