yaylag pastoralism
[edit]Please note that this article is about Australian droving, and hence the term "yaylag pastoralism" is not relevant. It may well be relevant elsewhere. —Preceding unsigned comment added by ARBrennan (talk • contribs) 11:17, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Droving dogs
[edit]No mention whatever of dogs in this article. Seems somewhat unlikely that drovers did not use them in Australia... --Richard New Forest (talk) 14:26, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Move material?
[edit]At present I can find the following droving-related articles, which have a good deal of overlap:
- Droving. Stub article about droving generally.
- Drovers' road. Article about droves, mainly in UK.
- Cattle drive. Redirects (for some reason) to:
- Cattle drives in the United States.
- Drover. Disambig page leading to this page and two of the above.
There are also related articles, such as Cowboy, Gaucho, Herder, Herding, Herding dog, Transhumance etc.
It seems to me that a lot of material in the current Drover (Australian) article is actually about droving rather than drovers. Shouldn't that stuff really go in the Droving article? Drover (Australian) would then become an Australian equivalent to Cowboy and Gaucho. Any thoughts? Not too keen on the name either... What about Australian drover? --Richard New Forest (talk) 14:26, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Merge
[edit]I am renewing this discussion about a move here, my idea is to merge the term Drover into this article and rename this article Drovingas the term seems to be not just confined to Australia. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 15:14, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
- I want to see what the Aussies have to say, particularly the most involved editors. We have articles on Stockmen, Cowboys, Charros, etc., so I lean toward keeping the occupation article in some form, though have no objection of adding some of the material here into an article on Droving (though that act has different names in different nations...) Distinction between Overlander and Drover
As an Aussie, I would have no objection to a limited merge of some elements of Drover Australian with the other forms of droving. However, I draw the line at 'Overlanders'. In Australia there is a real distinction between an overlander and a drover. Simply put, an overlander is an historical figure while a drover can be contemporary. Overlanders were the pioneering entrepreneurs of the early to mid 1800s who forged or established new stock routes, often exploring and opening up huge tracts of new country for pastoralism. Drovers later followed in their tracks, usually along what were by then well-established stock routes, and some still operate today. Kaarenmax19 (talk) 05:05, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
I don't think that droving is limited to Australians. A drover can be from Australia, but a drover can also be from the middle east or what have you. As I understand it, a drover is merely someone who drives cattle or other animals from one location to another - it isn't limited to Australia.Jasonnewyork (talk) 19:23, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
- Strongly disagree to a merge. Droving happened all over the world, not just in Australia. --Peter I. Vardy (talk) 19:59, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
