American women's chess champion?

[edit]

The first American women's chess champion was in 1937, I thought. How is it possible that she was champion from 1907 to 1920? Either the title was unofficial or the article U.S. Women's Chess Championship is incomplete. --Gereon K. (talk) 21:26, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. I don't know the history, but a guess is that it was an unofficial title determined by match play. The early history of the U.S. Men's Championship is similar, but since it is much more highly discussed there is general agreement on the men's champion from 1890 to 1935. I do think there are a couple wrinkles to that era not discussed in our article. Quale (talk) 00:13, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
