@Zanhe: Just FYI, I reverted your move. Do you have any reason to believe Feng Ru is the WP:COMMONNAME in English these days? Even if it is, it would have to be pretty dominating since per WP:ABOUTSELF, the person's choice of name should generally be respected (unless there's reason to think he didn't use Fung Joe Guey himself... but that would seem pretty shocking to me). It's like how Wikipedia has Steven Chu not Zhū Dìwén. SnowFire (talk) 20:02, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@SnowFire: Thanks for the notice. My move was WP:BOLD, so your revert is fair. I made the move because most modern sources about him use "Feng Ru". A google books search for "Feng Ru" aviation yields 3,000+ results, while "Fung Joe Guey" aviation gives only 200+. Even the City of Oakland uses "Feng Ru" and calls "Fung Joe Guey" a locally used name, see "Oakland History Room to Host Feng Ru". -Zanhe (talk) 20:15, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. That is a pretty dominating Google Books split, I'm surprised. I guess I was going off newspapers from a museum exhibit which clearly showed "Fung Joe Guey" used at the time, but maybe usage really has shifted. I suppose I'm fine with the move as long as "Fung Joe Guey" is mentioned prominently enough, even if as a "local name" per your source. SnowFire (talk) 20:20, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
After people die for a while, their idiosyncratic spellings tend to be forgotten and standardized romanizations become dominant. Even a former household name like Butterfly Wu is now mainly called "Hu Die" in sources. See also Shao Xunmei (vs. Sinmay Zau) and Yan Jici (vs. Ny Tsi-ze). -Zanhe (talk) 20:26, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
