Who's the announcer?

[edit]

Who is the male announcer who always calls the gymnastics? He's the one that is emphatic and says things like "..Absolute disaster" Can I have a name? Thanks! Smuckers It has to be good 08:45, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tim Dagget

or Al Trautwig

Reminder

[edit]

Whether you believe that the Chinese women gymnasts were legally of-age or not, Wikipedia is not a soapbox. --Kitch (Talk : Contrib) 17:44, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

True, but it should be noted that such a controversy exists. There are entire articles about controversies. Why not a mention here?Mercruz (talk) 19:14, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy

[edit]

Would it be considered appropriate to mention the numerous controversies surrounding this event on the main page, assuming neutral POV and proper documentation were used? --ThaddeusB (talk) 04:47, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since I was told to haul the discussion over here. Why isn't there a mention of this BS by the Chineese about their gymnasts age or the blatant robbery of the American team by the juges (and yes I'm an American, but this still deserves mention {in a less biased way} in the freakin' article).--67.140.56.121 (talk) 01:43, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For the uneven bars, the rule has made it clear, so please take back your rude word.

I agree. Mercruz (talk) 19:14, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I added a summation of the controversy. Please look it over and edit for any bias. I tried the best I could to discuss subject matter of factly and used an English, Australian and American news source.Tedmoseby (talk) 06:06, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Let us thank the IOC for pulling ita head out of its a**. Also, thank you for adding that section I like it and it doesn't appear biased.--69.40.141.124 (talk) 17:50, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone else think that this is noteworthy enough, if true, to be it's own article? Cloudyskies41 (talk) 01:44, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, i would also say a lot is going to come out about this. It may take some time but this story will be mentioned for years to come as is the last one from 2000 who now admitted she was too young. Bigware (talk) 12:54, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at 2004 gymnastics page, I see no contraversy section. Therefore, to keep up with the tradition, this section shouldn't exist, esp. when it is NOT proven. However, given it is a huge issue (esp. in US), I am okay with keeping this section here. However, to make things fair and so wiki doesn't look pro-US, I will edit the 2004 page and include a section on the contraversy surrounded Paul Hamm's all-around gold (it was a huge issue 4 years ago as well) and Artemov's rescore after the crowd booed for 5 minutes with english source articles as well. I'm not asking for keeping or removing this article but just consistency between the 2 back to back olympics. I'll post a similar comment in 2004 page and if nobody objects by end of tomorrow, I'll edit the other sheet. As far as a separate article goes, I'd more inclined to waiting until we have a final answer on this. If the athletes are proven to be underage (FIG or IOC disqualifies their scores for example), then it definitely deserves an article on its own. However, if the FIG or IOC rules the otherway, then its just media suspicious and some suspicious cached info (I looked at the cache by the hacker and it listed He Kexin's hometown as well so I am suspicous of the source). Without any hard proof, I hardly think this article justify an article by itself. I think given the situation is still in development, I think it is too early to tell what the consequences are and what impact it would make. As for people to talk about it years to come, I high doubt that if this is not proven. Also, I noticed a lot of editors on this page seems to take a view about guilty until proven innocent. Perhaps we should keep our feelings in check for wiki articles? Although I would say the section is very unbiased in itself. 69.204.249.221 (talk) 03:20, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It has already been proven and properly cited that the Chinese gymnasts in question are 14 or younger. If you have substantial proof that these claims are invalid then you are welcome to post them. Ninja337 (talk) 01:17, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Since when has it been proven?--69.40.139.226 (talk) 19:43, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was proven when the us lost. Americans never lose fairly, only when others cheat. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.55.32.72 (talk) 02:10, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The stars next to the names

[edit]

What do the stars next to He Kexin and The China's Women teams mean? Small5th (talk) 06:37, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it's because they are acused of being underage (14 not 10 BTW) by several sources and an investigation has been launched by the FIG.--69.40.141.124 (talk) 17:46, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've constantly deleted the asteriks because many people seemed to think the asteriks was unnecessary ESPECIALLY with the section already explaining about the age controversy, but an anonymous editor keeps reverting it back. Can we make a decision here as I am tired of doing this edit war? Small5th (talk) 07:17, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, no asterisk is needed. Its either FIG/IOC disqualify China's score, hence the entire table would be changed and a whole new article added to address this scandal, or the table is the way as it is as the current medal table stands. Wiki is about the what is the current result, not about what is possible in the future.
Ninja337: the accusation is He Kexin is 14 years old, not 10. Please get the facts straight before you start bashing people. Such biased comments just makes me think this has less to do with actually representing facts (as wiki is suppose to do) but more China-bashing.

69.204.249.221 (talk) 03:43, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't bashing anyone, please assume good faith. I just thought they looked more in the 6 through 10 range than 14. Maybe Chinese gymnasts look smaller because they have to breath polluted Chinese air. Ninja337 (talk) 01:15, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kudos

[edit]

To the editors who are maintaining this page, I wanted to say, "Nice job!" The table is very clear and easy to understand, for "at a glance" information about the medals, and how each country is doing. I wish that all of our Olympics pages were formatted this way, so we could easily step through the various years, and see the changes from Olympics to Olympics. --Elonka 17:56, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Repeated Removal of the Controversy Section

[edit]

I've seen the age controversy section disappear a couple of times, usually without comment or justification. While I can conceive of arguments for removing or cutting down the section, and note those who've voiced disagreement above, it seems proper to assess consensus via this talk page or at least provide some justification before the removal of an entire contentious section. I'm going to reinstate it for now, but I'll gladly back off if there is a general feeling that the link to the controversy article is sufficient. Ma Jiawei?

[edit]

Can somebody explain to me why Ma Jiawei is listed as a medallist in the group rhythmic event? I don't see her on the list of medalists from the event that can be found on beijing2008.cn , more precisely here: http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/INF/GR/C92B/GRW400000.shtml#GRW400101 . Fox334 (talk) 23:43, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, since nobody provided a source I'll remove her. If anyone has a source stating that she did recieve a medal then please add her back, but also provide the source. Fox334 (talk) 13:10, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV Dispute - Age Controversy

[edit]

The age controversy section sounds like it was written by Chinese state media. I have removed some of the redundancies (e.g., the repeated references to the FIG's initial decision) and fixed other grammatical edits, but further work is probably needed. 174.30.118.162 (talk) 13:00, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
