Substance
[edit]This piece ranks as just about the most poorly sourced biography of a living person I've yet come across on wikipedia. The POV needs toning down, the sources need improving, and the extraneous stuff needs to go. MarmadukePercy (talk) 01:54, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
As per WP:GOCE I have undertaken thorough revision aimed at correcting the above noted problems. The article is now divided into coherent section, with several additional references for known factual information, and edited for tone, coherence, and NPOV. The legal section now follows a chronological order that more or less allows the reader to understand the progress of complex litigation. While doubtless still problems still remain the article is, I believe, markedly enhanced and possibly ready to be removed from WP:GOCE project status.--BenJonson (talk) 22:41, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
I think the NPOV tag can be removed. In copy editing I also corrected wherever possible language that seemed to violate NPOV standards.--BenJonson (talk) 15:21, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Updates to Halsey Minors Wiki Page
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest was declined. A reviewer felt that this edit would not improve the article. |
I work at Live Planet as a community manager under CEO Halsey Minor. I wanted to share a draft re-write of the Halsey Minor page. The current page is inadequately sourced, incomplete, and its emphasis on different topics seems random. I believe the proposed draft more accurately represents Halsey Minor’s career and fairly includes both his successes and failures. As I have a conflict of interest, I am asking for an independent editor to review the draft and provide any feedback. Jasonliveplanet (talk) 18:16, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

[edit]- A diff of all suggested changes may be viewed here.
- Thank you for your draft proposal. While there are some valuable additions, overall the draft would not be an improvement to what is in the current standing version. Some feedback which might improve the draft:
- The prose in the draft uses contractions. (See MOS:CONTRACT.) Other phrasing in the draft seems stilted (
"Minor had become even more wealthy after Salesforce.com went public, Google bought GrandCentral, and CBS bought CNET"
.)[a] - The draft shortens some of the legal issues surrounding the subject.
- The draft inserts minor anecdotal claims regarding the subject (
"He was sick and watching TV at home, figuring there should be a channel on technology."
- The Reid and Turner sources do not contain ISBNs or page numbers. These two sources make up almost a quarter of all the ref tags used in the draft version (24%), so page numbers would be very helpful.
- The draft introduces a section discussing the subject's current interests and business ventures whose noteworthiness may be questionable.

Notes
- ^ The current standing version of the article itself uses phrasing which is not encyclopedic in tone (e.g., "On the other hand, a May 21, 2010 jury verdict found for Minor in U.S. District Court.")
- I have revised the draft to address @Spintendo:'s feedback below, removing contractions, adding page numbers to book cites, etc. However, I only added a sentence I think on lawsuits, because most of the lawsuit content on the current page is either unsourced or cited to blogs, short blurbs, etc. Most of the current page is focused on lawsuits - does it really need more? External links
[edit]The external link list was clearly a violation of WP:ELNO, but I'll put them here as possibly useful for sourcing:
- "BitBeat: BitReserve Vows Bitcoin-Like Costs, No Bitcoin-Like Risk"
- The Wall Street Journal May 4, 2010 "Auction Houses Strike Out Bidders Non Grata"
- Wired Magazine: The Inner Bezos
- Virginia Pilot Newspaper December 19, 2007 "Carter's Grove mansion sells"
- The Daily Progress Feb 8, 2010 "Minor sidesteps foreclosure threat"

request for draft article replacment
[edit]Hi. There was a request at BLP noticebourd for comments regarding replacement of the current article with a draft rewrite, there was only two comments, both, more or less in support of the new draft, User:Jasonliveplanet/draftHM please see Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard#Halsey_Minor for the detail, please take a look and if there are objections here to the replacement please comment , thanks. Govindaharihari (talk) 17:26, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
- I removed one questionable source (a questionable crypto blog for a claim with multiple sources already), otherwise no objection - David Gerard (talk) 17:46, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for your investigations and for contributing David G. Govindaharihari (talk) 18:07, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
- Almost 1⁄4 of the ref tags used in this draft do not contain
|page=
parameter information added as an{{rp}}
template. Instead, page ranges of approximately 40 pages are used. - 64% of the ref tags cited to the Barnes Hook source are unnecessary, because Barnes gets her information from the Reid and Turner sources.
- The first line of the Bankruptcy section would receive a
{{when}}
template, as it does not give a date:"Minor said he wanted to focus more on philanthropy and venture capitalism, rather than being a CEO."
As the bankruptcy ostensibly occurred in 2014, the Flores Daily Press source used to verify this first sentence cannot be used (or the sentence doesnt belong in that section) since the source used to verify it was written 7 years prior to the bankruptcy filing. - Twelve additional claims within the Bankruptcy section would also receive
{{when}}
templates, as dates are not ascribed to their occurrences either. - The draft does not specify if there is any difference between the biological father who committed suicide (and who wasn't discovered until 1995) and the father who was a "real estate broker". The claims regarding the father(s) in the draft are in two separate sections, one at the beginning of the draft and the other at the end, but it's unclear if this is the same person or different people.
- The draft contains several MOS:RELTIME errors.
- The bankruptcy is addressed using partially inveigled claims:
"Business Insider depicted the decline in Minor's wealth as the result of Minor going outside his specialty in tech."

Notes
- ^ Business Insider actually posits the bankruptcy as "most likely due to his expensive taste in real estate, art, and horses" including his $12 million dollar SF home architecturally inspired by Louis XV's Petit Trianon.
- Almost 1⁄4 of the ref tags used in this draft do not contain

Done converted to page numbers in the "ref" tag
- 64% of the ref tags cited to the Barnes Hook source are unnecessary, because Barnes gets her information from the Reid and Turner sources.
Done I removed the Hook cite wherever Reid or Turner were already cited for the same text

The citation does not include a specific date, just saying "he said repeatedly" and "he still"
- Twelve additional claims within the Bankruptcy section would also receive
{{when}}
templates, as dates are not ascribed to their occurrences either.
Most of these do not have a specific date in the citation or are not events that would not naturally occur on a specific date. Maybe others will find specific dates for some of these events in the future.
- The draft does not specify the difference between the biological father who committed suicide (and who wasn't discovered until 1995) and the father who was a "real estate broker". The claims regarding the father(s) in the draft are in two separate sections, one at the beginning of the draft and the other at the end.
I'm not sure I understand - there is only one father. Maybe someone will sort this out in the future.
- The bankruptcy is addressed using partially inveigled claims:
"Business Insider depicted the decline in Minor's wealth as the result of Minor going outside his specialty in tech."
{{efn|Business Insider actually posits the bankruptcy as "most likely due to his expensive taste in real estate, art, and horses" including his $12 million dollar SF home, a replica of Louis XV's Petit Trianon.
Done I just replaced the Business Insider comment with your quote from the citation above.

New article
[edit]Recent versions of the article are:
- 11 May 2019 original article
- 31 May 2019 article after removal of uncited text and poor sources
- 17 June 2019 new article from Jasonliveplanet's draft (current article as at this post)
I have not yet studied all the details in the new article but it looks much better with more WP:DUE material and better sourcing. There is no reason to insist on perfection—does anyone see any significant problems with the new article? Johnuniq (talk) 04:01, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
