Is there any information available as to the reason for the very brown color of the river? Considering the fact that it is the major source of tap water in Shanghai, should it be a concern for those of us who are living here and running the water over our bodies in our showers? There is a tremdous amount of commercial travel on the river (indicating polution from oil and fuel) and it‘s banks are covered with trash。
Again, my concern here is really just the source of the brown in the river's water. Is it just rediculously poluted from factories and commercial traffic, or is it simply a muddy river?
Can't directly answer you concerns, but the Chinese government has done some major clean up efforts on the Huangpu. It used to be filled with plastic bags a few months ago, I didn't see them any more when I was last there. That being said, I don't think very many sources of fresh water are just pumped directly into the tap. I'm sure they go through SOME kind of filtration process. It MUST, because the water that came out of the tap in my Pudong apartment was fairly clean, NOTHING like the river itself.211.114.56.153 04:48, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Artificial river vs canal
[edit]Why is the Huangpu River described as an artificial river, but not as a canal? Is it for historic reasons? Or because canals must be straight whereas artificial rivers have bends like a natural river?
