[SR-99][edit]

I am adding the SR-99 to the list of varients as what little information that can be found on the rifle says that it is an updated Galil Sniper rifle. In adition to one of my copies of Jane's Guns: Recognition guide the following websites were helpful in determining the rifles parentage. Weight isn't always a problem..[edit]

The weight of the Galil more than likely effectively eliminates most of the recoil in full auto fire. Also, Special Forces soldiers usually use enemy weapons so they can resupply in enemy territory.

Dangerous generalisations about what special forces do and don't do aside, this article's problem is that it was written, for some odd reason, as a constant comparison to the M16. I have no idea why this is, but I intend to address it shortly. Lots of citations will also be needed, no doubt. Geoff B 14:39, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Weight[edit]

Currently the weight on the wiki page is 8.6 pounds, but I have several sources that say the rifle is a full pound heaver at 9.6 pounds. Can someone please confirm which the correct weight is? The m-16a2 weighs around 8.6 pounds, and I doubt it is the same weight as the galil. The R4 rifle weighs about 9.6 pounds as well so shouldn't they be the same weight? Granted the difference could be the AR vs the ARM. JamesL85 05:02, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguate from the Galilee?[edit]

Shouldn't there be a disambiguation page differentiating this weapon from the Galilee area of Israel, which in Hebrew is called the Galil? Or there could be a redirect from "Galil" to the Galilee page and a note at the top saying "for the weapon, see Galil (weapon)"?Songflower (talk) 06:51, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mexico[edit]

Does anybody know if mexico uses this rifle for some of its police forces? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Homan05 (talkcontribs) 00:44, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mexican police do use the Galil as you can see from these pics [3][4] [5] [6] [7] But we can't use these as evidence in the article because of Wiki's: WP:No Original Research. Ocelotl10293 (talk) 01:02, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Based on that, I will insert Mexico into the list. A true source however would be very desireable at some point. Koalorka (talk) 23:53, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

this is a confirmation that mexico uses Galil although it's in Spanish, it says public security forces receive the galil rifle —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.248.215.221 (talk) 19:35, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I added Mexico (specifically, the Secretaría de Seguridad Pública) to the users list with that link cited as a source. ROG5728 (talk) 03:25, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nepalies soldier with Galil?[edit]

I think both the soldiers in the picture are Indian Army. One of them s holding a sterling carbine produced in India as carbine 1A and the Gorkha soldier is holding a FN-FAL licensed produced in India. I am not an expert on these matters so I have not edited this page but I think experts should take a look. I have never herd of Indian forces using Galil. I feel INSAS looks somewhat similar. India provided Nepal with it's used FALs and some 300000 brand new INSAS (Before issuing it to Indian Army!!).--Nikhil Sanjay Bapat (talk) 14:35, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Look at the shoulder patch of the soldier standing to the right. Koalorka (talk) 14:47, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Three shoots selection[edit]

I saw in a book, a IMI Galil with selection for three shoots.It was in 7.62 caliber.Agre22 (talk) 17:10, 10 March 2009 (UTC)agre22[reply]

Users[edit]

Although photos alone are not permissible as a sole reference, the images from U.S. DOD sources are captioned and are considered reliable. Let them be until a full citation can be found. Koalorka (talk) 13:51, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, read edit summaries and histories before reverting.--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 14:13, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also be reasonable with these lists. Dubious users should be discarded without question, but if Israel is being removed for a lack of reference on using its own service rifle, than we're straining credulity. Koalorka (talk) 14:21, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I was waiting for one of these airsofters to show their ass and remove Israel, too! :) But, in all seriousness, I have seen the R4 referred to as a Galil variant and for that matter the R4, the Galil, and the Valmet all listed as AK-47 variants. I'd also say that I've seen more differences between the M-10 and the M-11, as well as different manufacturers than I have between the Galil and the R4...I'm not suggesting we consolidate these pages...just saying...Also is just a hyperlink as a source considered acceptable for this project? That has the potential to get ugly.--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 14:28, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In the absence of literary sources, a link to an official government institution will do. The R4 is most certainly a Galil variant, check out the dedicated R4 page which I authored :). The Galil is a refined version of the AK by way of the Finnish Rk 62. It is sometimes difficult to determine which designs deserve their own pages, the guideline is open to interpretation, so it boils down to common sense. Koalorka (talk) 14:45, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My only concern is these airsoft/videogame junkies don't see that as free license to use links spawned from wiki as an acceptable source, etc. I've seen the R4 page and have been lucky enough to have owned one. I have some printed matter on the R4 I'll have to dig up again, mostly Kokalis in the early-mid 90's.--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 14:54, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Try to find it! Kokalis has an encyclopedic knowledge of firearms and a technical understanding of the operating principles. He's my favorite English-language author on the subject. If you can dig that up, shoot me a scan or something and I can incorporate it into the R4 page. Koalorka (talk) 15:01, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody had gone down to the users section and divided all the users into geographical sections. I have undone this, since more popular rifle's pages, such as AK-47 did not have the same thing. I think they should either all be divided or none.Grizzly chipmunk (talk) 19:04, 29 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Brazil[edit]

The Brazilian army NEVER used the Galil. Thats wrong.--187.25.161.252 (talk) 21:23, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

The article's main picture is the most unrepresentative picture of a real life Galil I have ever seen. 93.172.76.71 (talk) 12:57, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like someone changed the image to one of the Colombian licensed copy of the Galil. I agree that a more basic Galil should be depicted in the infobox.--L1A1 FAL (talk) 19:39, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that the older image got deleted due to a copyright issue. Until another image is posted, I have added a caption noting that the pictured weapon is a Colombian Galil ACE. None of the other images currently on there are really great for an infobox.--L1A1 FAL (talk) 19:46, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

IDF[edit]

The Galil was taken out of service in the IDF several years ago in all combat units (it was last used by Armory and Artillery corps, and maybe Combat Engineering). While it's possible some units still exist in some places, it is largely not really in use. צחי (talk) 20:26, 27 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of much of the information pertaining to the Galil[edit]

At some point someone removed a lot of the information (e.g. calibers it was chambered in, rate of fire, muzzle velocity, etc) and left the info box barren and lacking in information. I lack the knowhow to fix this issue, but i was hoping someone would remedy this.
