About the Olympiad
In September 2016 the opening ceremony of the first International Olympiad of Metropolises was held in Moscow. The contest was organized on the initiative of the Mayor of Moscow.
The words “Moscow is the land of hospitality, the land of discoveries” became a motto for 173 high school students from 18 countries of the world. Teams of young experts in mathematics, informatics, chemistry and physics came to the Russian capital from 22 biggest cities and capitals from all over the world: Abu-Dhabi, Almaty, Astana, Belgrade, Berlin, Bishkek, Budapest, Jakarta, Düsseldorf, Yerevan, Leipzig, Milan, Minsk, New-Delhi, Beijing, Riga, St. Petersburg, Sofia, Tallinn, Tel-Aviv, Helsinki, and Moscow that hosted the event.
Participants of the Olympiad of Metropolises were students of 14 to 18 years of age. Every city was presented by 8 students and team leaders who were translating the tasks into the native language of the team.
Physics and chemistry contests consisted of theoretical and experimental rounds. Mathematics and informatics sections included solving of problems. The complexity of tasks was comparable to traditional international Olympiads.
In addition to the main contests the students took part in an exciting multi-disciplinary blitz contest. Teams simultaneously were solving tasks in mathematics, informatics, chemistry and physics. Before coming to the Olympiad every team sent their tasks for each of the four disciplines of the final school exam level. The blitz contest tasks were selected from them. The results of the blitz contest were not included into the final score.
The organizers prepared an exciting cultural program. The students took part in a walking tour Moscow Quest round the city, they learnt about the history and cultural heritage of Russia and its capital, visited museums, exhibitions and festivities devoted to the Day of Moscow.
Chemistry
The competition consists of Theoretical and Experimental rounds.
Students will be asked to solve 5 problems in theoretical round, and 2 problems in experimental round. The estimated duration of each round is 4 hours.
Participants will be provided with two versions of tasks: in English and in student's mother tongue.
Requirements and tasks examples.
Physics
The competition consists of Theoretical and Experimental rounds.
Students will be asked to solve 3 problems in theoretical round, and 1 problem in experimental round. The estimated duration of each round is 5 hours.
Participants will be provided with two versions of tasks: in English and in student's mother tongue.
Requirements and tasks examples.
Informatics
The competition consists of two rounds of practice.
Students will be asked to solve 4 problems in each round. The estimated duration of each round is 4 hours.
Participants will be provided with two versions of tasks: in English and in student's mother tongue.
Requirements and tasks examples.
The updated contestant image for VirtualBox, which will be used during the rounds on informatics is available here: https://yadi.sk/d/jsbKAZEbufmGK. If you don't log in automatically, choose username 'contestant' and press 'Enter'.
Mathematics
The Contest includes two rounds and it takes place in two consecutive days. On each day of the Contest the examination starts in the morning and lasts for 4,5 hours. Each of two papers consists of 3 problems. A participant can receive a maximum of seven points for each problem. Each participant may receive the problems in two languages (in English and in student's mother tongue). The format and the level of tasks correspond to the level of the International Mathematical Olympiad and other major international competitions, such as the Romanian Masters or International Zhautykov Olympiad.
Themes of problems are in line with the All-Russian Olympiad, the Tournament of Towns and the Moscow Mathematical Olympiad. The problems cover various fields of school mathematics (mostly geometry, number theory, algebra and combinatorics). The problems do not require knowledge of higher mathematics. Generally, all the problems have short solutions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Laratracy (talk • contribs) 06:10, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad
[edit]Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad http://www.seamo-official.org/
SASMO is a math olympiad contest that stretches not only the brightest students but is aimed at instilling confidence for all students.
The contest is designed in a way to make every student love Math again. SASMO contest fits nicely into the school curriculum with a high focus on non routine problem sums – preparing for SASMO contest helps students prepare for the PSLE and O-Level exams.
Created in 2006, SASMO is one of largest math contests in Asia. It has expanded from 155 local participants in 2006 to more than 20 000 participants from 19 countries in SASMO 2016. More than 100 schools from Singapore took part in SASMO 2016.
The SASMO Team with the support of Advisory Council spend countless hours carefully developing contest papers which will touch on both school and Olympiad maths. This combined effort allow participants to do better compared to pure-Olympiad papers, since they are familiar with some questions and are able to put on their thinking caps for others, bringing out the inner mathematician in them.
With realistic and high standards, SASMO contests aim to stretch the untapped thinking potential of the student population, their participation in SASMO will help them improve in school mathematics as well as higher order thinking skills (HOTS). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Laratracy (talk • contribs) 07:07, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

Draft:List of Olympiads
[edit]See Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Draft:List of Olympiads and note the suggestion that the draft contains information that may be worth merging into this article. I think it might be slightly more complicated, but a worthy idea to consider. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 20:29, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Inclusion criteria
[edit]Many olympiads have been added to and later removed from this list due to concerns over notability. There is no universally agreed upon set of olympiads that count as "international science olympiads", but I hope we can come to a consensus for some criteria to consider before adding or removing olympiads from this list. Here's my proposal:
- Must be truly international: not limited to a single country or group of countries (e.g. EGMO wouldn't count)
- Must be scientific: this term may be interpreted broadly to include mathematics and the social sciences, but in my opinion doesn't include history, philosophy, or geography. If these are to be included, perhaps this article should be retitled "International Olympiad".
- Must be an olympiad: this excludes science fairs like ISEF and buzzer-based competitions
Also, all of the agreed-upon olympiads are restricted to high school or middle school students, so that should probably be a requirement.
In addition to being an international science olympiad, for inclusion in this list olympiad should meet the following notability criteria:
- Must have run at least 5 times. Every now and then new olympiads are started but fail to get off the ground. Thus, new olympiads need to prove themselves before being added to this list.
- Must be notable enough to have their own Wikipedia article
Curious to hear what others think about this list. Djkauffman (talk) 15:11, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
- This strikes me as a good set of criteria. I'd add on to the "truly international" point, and say that each participating country must send 1-2 teams of no more than 6 students. Perhaps there are some Olympiads that allow teams of 8 or so, as I'm not familiar with each one, but something like the International History Olympiad, which doesn't have true national teams and which is attended by tens if not hundreds of American students each year, should absolutely not count. I'd otherwise be inclined to allow competitions like iGeo or IPO but your argument is reasonable.
- It may also be worthwhile to add a note to the article on the nebulous nature of the criteria defining an ISO. I think this is a useful article to have because many people likely wonder about the most recognized international academic competitions, and the olympiads are similar enough that it is quite reasonable to categorize them under the same label, but "International Science Olympiads" aren't actually a thing, in the sense that there's no definition of them and the organizers of the IMO couldn't care less about the IBO. 42Q7 (talk) 20:34, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- There is another point, which may seem so blindingly obvious to experienced Wikipedians as not to need mentioning, but is not always clear to new editors, so it is worth mentioning here. Of course, in order to be included any olympiad must satisfy Wikipedia's notability guidelines, and, just as with most list articles, one which has not been demonstrated to be notable enough to be the subject of a Wikipedia article must not be included. Add "International Economics Olympiad" in the table under the section "International Science Olympiads", with the following details:
Science: "International Economics Olympiad"
Symbol: "IEO"
Year: "since 2018"
Host Country (For 2023): "Greece"
Host Country (For 2024): "Hong Kong SAR"

- There have been many attempts to add Economics by single purpose users, but it is not commonly recognized, is not notable, and thus does not meet the requirements to be listed. - MrOllie (talk) 15:56, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- This is just wrong. It is way more recognized than many of the olympiads, in fact, this year, it will have one of the most countries in participation. Loola103 (talk) 03:17, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
