British, English categories or both?
[edit]If the person is English then I find no reason to have him in both English and British categories. Category:British writers is overpopulated and it's written "Articles in this category should be moved to subcategories when appropriate". Let's discuss the problem here. -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:17, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
- If someone is English they are automatically British, so need only be in the English category (as it is a subcat of the British one). However the article does not say he is English, and being born in England does not make one English. Eg I was born in England but am Scottish. Someone called Jones born in Shropshire might well be Welsh. My children were born in Malawi but are British (they could apply for Malawi nationality but would not necessarily get it, much as someone born in Britain can apply for citizenship but might be turned down). One needs a source to say he is English: you can't place people in categories unless the article supports it. (I have no idea whether this person could be described as English.) - I am OK if we put the article under the "British..." categories but not both in "English..." and "British...". We probably need a reliable source. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:33, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
