Ivan Lönnberg in the Olympics - or not

[edit]

Athletics at the 1912 Summer Olympics – Men's marathon and Sweden at the 1912 Summer Olympics labels his participation as DNF - did not finish. In the book "Sympatiens hemlighetsfulla makt" it says he had to abstain from the competition due to illness. (The book is not focused on the sport part of his life.) On this page made by one of his relatives living today, about members of the family [1] it says he wanted to compete in the Olympics but they didn't accept him. The question is what to believe. --Stighammar (talk) 02:40, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the source from Sports Reference. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 09:35, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The question is then how "did not finish" is defined, in that database and in that particular marathon race. If those who did not even turn up are mentioned as "did not finish" then the Sports Reference and the book agree. The number of DNF in that marathon is huge, probably due to the weather. --Stighammar (talk) 09:48, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sports Ref also lists people who did not start as a DNS, so therefore, I can only assume that he was present at the start line at the 1912 Olympics. Nice work on finding out more about him too! Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 09:51, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"during the last weeks of the war"

[edit]

In the book Sympatiens hemlighetsfulla makt it says (p. 255) that Lönnberg died during the last weeks of the war. Since the war ended in november this can not be the case. It's either a complete misunderstanding, or the turns of the war in May 1918 would somehow have removed his union from action. If someone can clear that out it's interesting, otherwise we just leave it out. --Stighammar (talk) 09:55, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
