Europe trip
[edit]Could it be the trip made by the Ivor and Jean to France and Bavaria in 1932 was his first, and the story of the boy in Europe was an error which gained credence by repetition? I have found no newspaper mention of his absence in 1927 or 1928, which should have been newsworthy. This article says that on his return he was master of a life class at the School of Arts and Crafts, again no mention in 1927 or 1928. The first newspaper mention I can find of him running a life class was in 1937. And the chap in the photograph does not look like a 15-year-old. Not enough to falsify the claim, but suggestive. - Well it seems I couldn't have been more wrong! Just had a peep at Jane Hylton's excellent The Productive Artist, and am now in no doubt that he was with Biloul in Paris (first trying out with Calarossi, the Grande Chaumière, and Académie Julian) for six months and with Heyman another six. All told he was away from Adelaide and his family for two years, returning with the clothes he stood up in and suitcases stuffed with books and paintings. What a guy! What parents!
