Move help requested

[edit]

The name of this article should be moved to James Sykes (governor) to conform to the standard of disambiguating politicians by their most significant office, rather than occupation. An admin's assistance is required. stilltim 23:02, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As mentioned at Talk:Nicholas Van Dyke (1769-1826), wouldn't it be easier to disambiguate as James Sykes, Sr. and James Sykes, Jr.? There's no hard and fast rule about disambiguating politicians by their most significant office. olderwiser 01:35, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Sr/Jr suffix was never used by these people to my knowledge and to use it here would suggest they did. Otherwise, it would be fine. While not hard and fast, the office held standard is widely accepted and used when Sr/Jr or middle name does not help. stilltim 13:04, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If the Jr./Sr. monikers were not used, then why do the articles use them to refer to these people? olderwiser 13:50, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There is no standard form of disambiguation for WP; and the article suggests contemporary usage was "Acting Governor". Septentrionalis 21:29, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Date of accession

[edit]

Source for date of accession, please? ANB has no article on Sykes, and says Gov. Bassett resigned in late February. Septentrionalis 21:29, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have adopted February 20 from Richard Bassett. However, depending on the wording of Delaware's constitution, it is concievable that he retained his seat in the House; compare Richard Codey. Septentrionalis 23:45, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
