Marine Corps Service

[edit]

When I arrived back from Vietnam, I was assigned as permanent personnel to a Marine Corps reserve unit in Los Alamitos, CA. Jay Johnstone was a reservist reporting to this unit. To my knowledge, he never missed a meeting or asked for special favors of any type because of his celebrity. Even when he was traded to the Chicago White Sox, he returned regularly for his reserve meetings. I know Jay has always given the Marine Corps a lot of credit for his longevity in baseball. He was a great guy. Semper Fi Jay.

Connection with Rick Monday

[edit]

I removed this section as it is completely irrelevant. The section was: Johnstone was born in Manchester, Connecticut, on the same day, month and year as Rick Monday, a teammate on the Dodgers' 1981 World Series championship team. Both also served in the Marine Corps in the 1960s early in their baseball careers. Both also bat left and played for the Athletics, Cubs and Dodgers. Does it really matter that they were born on the same day and were both Marines? --dashiellx (talk) 16:05, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It might not "matter" but it is interesting...CG in California — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.231.23.84 (talk) 23:20, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

marriages

[edit]

I was sure Jay Johnstone was previously married to Adrienne Bello from West Covina, Ca & they had at least 2 children in the 1970s. I hope someone can verify this information.... 2600:8802:C08:A000:5818:E16B:58B:297C (talk) 21:42, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
