Taken office?

[edit]

Nino has apparently not taken office yet...can anyone shed any light on the situation? Is there a planned date for him to take office, or is the whole situation in limbo? Everyking 09:32, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Removed biography from national article

[edit]

"Background

Born on April 27, 1939, in the capital city of Bissau, Vieira was originally trained as an electrician. He joined the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) of Amilcar Cabral in 1960 and soon became a significant name in the country's guerrilla war against Portuguese colonial rule. During the war, he showed himself to be a skilled military leader. He also took on the name "Nino" during those years of struggle, a name that prevails today.

Political Legacy

In 1972, Vieira was appointed president of the National People's Assembly. In 1978, he was appointed Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau. Then on Nov. 14, 1980, Vieira toppled the government of Luís Cabral -- half-brother of Amilcar Cabral -- in a bloodless military coup.

A failed coup attempt against the government in June 1998 resulted in the country's descent into a brief and violent civil war between forces loyal to Vieira and those loyal to rebel leader Ansumane Mané. Rebels ousted the government of Vieira on May 7, 1999. He took refuge in the Portuguese embassy and then sought exile in Portugal.

In April 2005, nearly two years after another military coup toppled the government of President Kumba Yalá, Vieira returned home to contest the elections, which he won."

Death

[edit]

With the army claiming responsibility for his death and then switching to saying they had nothing to do with it, we should probably wait for a final public announcement before changing it one way or another, since both viewpoints are present already. India

[edit]

It says India condemned the death, but the refernce link provided mentions only US and EU but NOT India. Please reply soon, else I'll remove India form the list. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:59, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph

[edit]

What's up with that photograph? He seems to be sort of, uh, ... snarling. Was that his deliberate portrait? --GenkiNeko (talk) 11:04, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Death by firearm in Guinea-Bissau

[edit]

Should Vieira be in this category given the conflicting causes of death in the article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.197.65.138 (talk) 00:38, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

international election observers?

[edit]

it is not completely the right place to raise the topic, but i can't think of a more categorial one, so when the 1990s elections are described as "International election observers considered both rounds generally free and fair." can this be attributed or specified? personally i don't think international observers neccesarrily speak truth about their every impressions, so it's kind of the only indication who supported who, at the time of any such election. considering that, i would like an attribution or specification to that statement. (for exampel embassadors have at times had a semi-official say in the matter, but also the eu, usia, un, and others have been known to send observers. where my question is: who liked the result (..), i would also agree if there was a categorisation of such election "auditting". (on the insulted side.. without such a categorisation this sentence mostly tells me: some were having an interesse in the affair, probably btw pro vierra is my impression. i can think about history without such a loose and proofless statement included in a former colony's history..24.132.171.225 (talk) 18:17, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
