Slavery
[edit]Why is the slavery panel here? I don't see why such prominence is given to this, when it is his musical ability which is the notable aspect which gives rise to this article.Leutha (talk) 10:35, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
- He wasn't a violinist when he was captured as a child and his enslavement was an important part of his history which you can't just ignore?Theroadislong (talk) 10:40, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
- I must admit I do not understand why you reverted my edit, and replaced it with a contradictory statement and even went so far as to claim that my edit was "unhelpful". According to you he was born a slave - but where is the evidence - in fact latter on in the article it says he was captured by Portugese slave traders but you want to insist that he was a slave from birth. Further, it would seem redundant to suggest that he was born in early life. Your contention is not supported by the references.
- Also I do not understand your suggestion that I would wish to ignore is enslavement. On the contrary, this was an element remained following my edit. What I question is the prominence of including the slavery box, a question to which you have failed to respond. Please look at Phillis Wheatley, Ukawsaw Gronniosaw, Ottobah Cugoano, Equiano, Scipio Africanus (slave), Francis Barber, John Brown (fugitive slave), John Edmonstone, Cesar Picton, Mary Prince, and Julius Soubise. None of them have the slavery box. I noticed however that on the George Africanus page it has been included, and indeed I have questioned that there. I could see an argument for inclusion for active abolitionists like Equiano and Cugoano, but I do notsee it as appropriate for all these people.
- Also I must admit I found your whole tone disappointing and not what I would expect from an experienced Wikipedian. I hope you are not having a bad day.Leutha (talk) 15:04, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
- I have reverted to your version, I think I must have misread it the first time! I don't see why we should remove the slavery section though which is quite helpful in getting a broader picture. Theroadislong (talk) 15:14, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
- I think the question is this, would have been just as notable if it were not known that he had been a slave? I have corrected the article as regards reference to abolition of slavery as only the slave trade was made illegal in 1807. Whilst he has gained particular attention from his experiences as a slave from a more contemporary public, I feel the inclusion of the box would be more appropriate if there was some evidence in having been active as an abolitionist. What I think is needed is a consistent use of the box focused on the lines I have outlined.Leutha (talk) 16:11, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
