    Comment This is not a review, but I have a question. How is this a 5x expansion? At 03:10, March 18, 2024 (2654 characters (434 words)) and on 18:24, May 6, 2024 (1893 characters (303 words)) --evrik (talk) 03:33, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'll review this. Unfortunately, the article is a long ways from meetings the good article criteria, particularly the criterion "broad coverage". I don't think the deficiencies can reasonably be addressed within the normal editing timeframe for a good article review, so this review will be quickfailed, per WP:QF. That being said, here are some suggestions that should help future nominators bring the article up to standards:

    • Lead and background section: The lead should be expanded to provide a more detailed summary of the mine. Currently, it jumps directly into specifics without offering a broader context. A good lead should summarize the key points of the article, including the mine's significance, history, and key facts. Of source, this should be done after expanding the article's content, and then the guidelines at WP:LEAD should be followed.
    • There's very little discussion of the mine's history. Here's what a "History" section might include:
Discovery and early exploration: Detail the early exploration activities by De Beers, including the geological surveys in the 1970s and the discovery of the Jwaneng deposit in 1973.
Development and construction: Discuss the planning, evaluation, and construction phases from discovery to the commencement of operations in 1982.
Operational milestones: Highlight significant milestones in the mine's history, such as the first diamond recovered, major expansions, technological advancements, and key production figures over the years.
Economic impact over time: Describe the mine's contribution to Botswana's economy from its inception to the present, including any significant changes in production or economic importance.
    • Geology
Provide a more in-depth analysis of the kimberlite rock and the geological characteristics of the Jwaneng pipe, including any unique features.
Include information on the types of diamonds found in the mine, their quality, and how they compare to other major diamond mines.
Summarize key findings from geological studies and research papers on the Jwaneng mine (there are many sources; go to Google Scholar and search for "jwaneng diamond mine in botswana")
    • Mining operations
Mining techniques and equipment: Explain the mining techniques used (open-pit, underground mining) and the types of equipment and technology employed.
Safety and environmental practices: Describe the safety measures in place for workers and the environmental management practices to minimize the ecological impact.
Processing facilities: Detail the processes involved in diamond extraction, from mining the ore to sorting and cutting the diamonds.
    • Economic impact
Contribution to Botswana's GDP: Provide data and analysis on the mine's contribution to Botswana's GDP over the years.
Employment and training: Expand on the employment opportunities provided by the mine, including training programs and initiatives for local communities.
Revenue and exports: Include information on the revenue generated from diamond sales and the mine's role in Botswana's export economy.Social and Community Impact
    • Community initiatives
Detail the various community initiatives sponsored by Debswana, such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.
Corporate social responsibility: Discuss Debswana's corporate social responsibility programs and their impact on the local communities.
Health and education facilities: Provide more information on the Jwaneng Mine Hospital, Acacia Primary School, and other facilities supported by the mine.
    • Technological innovations
Technological advancements: Highlight any technological advancements or innovations implemented at the Jwaneng mine, such as automation, digitalization, or sustainable practices.
Research and development: Discuss any ongoing research and development efforts aimed at improving mining efficiency and sustainability.Environmental Impact
    • Environmental Challenges
Identify the key environmental challenges associated with the mine, such as water usage, waste management, and habitat disruption.
Mitigation strategies: Describe the strategies and measures taken by the mine to mitigate its environmental impact, including the ISO 14001 certification for environmental compliance.
    • Additional visuals and media
Historical photos: If available, include historical photos of the mine's development or other media that gives further insights into the mine's history, operations, and impact.

Not all of this info needs to be included, and it might not be possible to find sources for all of these suggestions. But a brief online search shows that there's a substantial body of literature out there about this topic that could be used. I noticed that the Lock 2019 source is currently only used to cite a single fact, but it could/should be used as a main source for a future "History" section.
