"The" in running text

[edit]

Since I'm copy-editing this article, before anyone asks: When you have a title like The King of Fighters and you need to put it into a sentence where English grammar requires the noun to take the definite article "the", the correct thing to do is omit the "The" from the title:

Green tickY …from the King of Fighters series…
Red XN …from The King of Fighters series…
Red XN …from the The King of Fighters series…

See, e.g., the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition, paragraph 8.167 (p. 452). That's under the "Books and Periodicals" section, but the same rule applies to the titles of other works. // ⌘macwhiz (talk) 02:01, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Initial comments

[edit]
  • "(formerly known as "SNK")" - no need for quotations here
  • " in The King of Fighters '99 released in 1999" - comma between "'99" and "released"
  • "He stars as the reluctant hero in the NESTS story arc" - what does NESTS stand for? The lead doesn't clarify this for readers
  • "was mainly due to popular response for the character" - I'd change this to popular reception
  • "Nevertheless, the character designer Falcoon said K' was one of his favorites original King of Fighters characters" - remove the plural on "favorites". Also, would it be worth changing Falcoon to his real name?
  • "They also jokingly mentioned that the reason for his hair being bushier than need" - "bushier than need"? Is it meant to be bushier than needed?
  • "advised advanced players to use K' as he commented once the player has learnt well how to control him" - the latter half of the sentence doesn't make sense. I'd change this to advised advanced players to use K' as he stated that once the player had learned how to control him
  • "For The King of Fighters XIII, K'‍ 's" - there are two apostrophes here - oh wait, I just realised this is correct, bearing in mind his name ends with an apostrophe
  • "design was worked with the concept of his cool appearance" - 'cool' isn't encyclopaedic. If it's taken from a quote, then I'd put "cool" in quotes
  • "Developers like the result" - liked
  • "such as one in which he puts his sunglasses" - puts on
  • "His gameplay mechanics were worked so that gamers who used to use him would not find him weird" - this is not encyclopaedic! Needs rephrasing
  • "He stands 183cm (6'0") and his weight is that of 65kg (143 lbs)" - should be He stands 183cm (6'0") tall and weighs 65kg (143 lbs)
  • "The participants often critize him for being antisocial" - criticize

On hold

[edit]

I'm a little worried about some unencyclopaedic material I found above, but other than that the article appears solid and well researched. Once all of the above are addressed, I'll take another look and see how if it meets the GA criteria. Good work on the article so far JAGUAR  21:50, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comments. I already tried to change the article based on them.Tintor2 (talk) 22:27, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Tintor! I've gone through the changed and am satisfied that this meets the GA criteria. Well done! JAGUAR  22:35, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Uncertain about overview sentence, intent to rewrite

[edit]

In the overview there is a sentence reading "While Ks gameplay has been altered across the franchise in order to be more stylish, his physical appearance has been different." I'm not sure what the second part of the sentence "his physical appearance has been different" is trying to say. Is it trying to say that unlike his gameplay, his appearance hasn't changed? That would seem to be the most likely meaning implied. I was going to fix this myself, but I thought I'd check if I had the correct interpretation first. Article title

[edit]

I'm puzzled by the article's title. It's K' (K + apostrophe), but the first sentence instead starts by defining the subject as K Dash, and only then adding it's commonly stylised as K′ (K + prime). Going off just this sentence, I'd expect the title to be K Dash, but then the rest of the article refers to the subject as K', so I guess that makes sense. But then, why is this an apostrophe? If the character is indeed alternatively known as K Prime, then that must then be the actual prime symbol rather than an apostrophe.

Normally, to answer such a question I'd go to the sources and look at what the more reliable of them do. But as far as I can see, almost all of the sources are web pages, and even then not of the type that you would expect to feature old-fashioned, meticulous typography.

Also, isn't it a it awkward to refer to the subject as K' in running text, especially in combination with the possessive 's (in the article there are 14 instances of the string K''s)? – Uanfala (talk) 22:17, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Uanfala: According to the official website, the character's name is K'. However, "K Dash" seems to be the pronounciation which is only mentioned in the Maximum Impact games as there is no voice acting. The announcer and Kula Diamond specifically pronounce it as "K Dash" but for some reason the title is K' in written form. About "K Prime" that's actually I never heard.Tintor2 (talk) 23:25, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The prime symbol is known as "dash" (ダッシュ dasshu) in Japanese. Nardog (talk) 14:16, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
