Identifying as a Nazi

The sources linked to validate Ye's made up Nazi identification don't share any direct quotes about him saying he identifies as a Nazi, and thus should be deleted along with the false statement, just because someone says something in an article doesn't mean it's more credible than reality, never in the whole Alex Jones interview did Ye say he identified as a Nazi. 5.28.177.100 (talk) 18:15, 9 December 2022 (UTC)

Kanye West praises Hitler, calls himself a Nazi in unhinged interview – Muboshgu (talk) 18:21, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
Here is the excerpt from the interview posted to Twitter. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 18:31, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
Clearly he doesn't mean it literally but instead he's making a point about the accusations labeled against him 141.226.9.91 (talk) 19:52, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
Moving the goalposts, I see. First, he didn't say it at all, now he said it but only to "make a point"? It's not up to us to interpret primary sources. We leave that to RS. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 20:04, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
If someone said to me "I am a Nazi", I would take them at their word. (And get away from them as fast as possible.) The reliable sources are taking him at his word. – Muboshgu (talk) 21:15, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
If someone with a very public history of mental illness, including paranoid delusions, who just went through a divorce and a few years ago changed his name because In the Bible it means 'you'. So, I'm you. I'm us. It's us. said Every human being has value that they brought to the table, especially Hitler. then said he liked Hitler and was a Nazi while wearing a skintight black mask talking to Alex Jones and Nick Fuentes I probably wouldn't take their word for it. I would probably look back at their history and hope they get the help they need.
We're likely watching someone have yet another public breakdown, and rushing to categorize them as a Nazi. There is no excuse for his antisemitism, or really anything he's been doing, but to take his words to mean that he identifies as and follows the beliefs of actual Nazis to the point of a defining characteristic for categorization seems amiss. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 00:18, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
Frankly, all of this is beside the point. West's mental health issues are documented in the article, and I trust readers to draw their own conclusions about the gravity of his words. The mere fact that West uttered the words "I'm a Nazi" and the resulting coverage thereof makes this notable. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 01:09, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
I'm speaking more towards the categorization that had been added. Inclusion in the article clearly due with the amount of coverage it's garnered, but I'm less sure about WP:CATDEF. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 01:18, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
I totally agree with you there, his identification as a Nazi is clearly not (yet) a defining characteristic of his per WP:COPDEF. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 01:21, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
May I ask how this doesn't meet the code of defining trait, but all his other political affiliations do? He's got several political categorizations, and his Neo-Nazism isn't a one-off thing. It isn't like he made a poor choice comment and then said nothing else of relevance on the subject, he's repeatedly spouted antisemitic talking points and called himself a Nazi. In the Alex Jones interview, Jones repeatedly tried to get him to not identify as a Nazi, and then kept insisting on it. Docktuh (talk) 04:14, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
I hope I am allowed to say this, but I totally agree with User:ScottishFinnishRadish. 47.232.88.19 (talk) 16:17, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, that’s exactly what it seems like to me. “I’m a Nazi, now what?” Is 100x more likely to be him making a point than it is a declaration of any kind. Sethafterdark (talk) 05:31, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
He's very obviously cut off in that clip. I don't know if he's actually self-identified as a Nazi elsewhere, and he certainly ticks most of the boxes for being labelled a neo-Nazi, but this isn't a self-identification. It hurts the trustworthiness of Wikipedia to mention it as such. -- Antondimak (talk) 20:41, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
We're not supporting the claim with that little snippet in the article. The editor asked for a direct quote from the interview, and I gave it to them. Times of Israel and Vanity Fair, both reputable publications, are used to support the claim in the article. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 20:53, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
He literally said on Alex Jones' show "I am a Nazi". And you say this isn't a self-identification and think that our "trustworthiness" is harmed by including that he literally said "I am a Nazi"? Wikipedia reflects the reliable sources that note that he went on Alex Jones' show and said "I am a Nazi". – Muboshgu (talk) 21:00, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
"unhinged" is a personal opinion, not fact. Don't put opinions on wikipedia.
311 needs correcting. It's the FIFTH commandment, not the 6th. 98.123.126.45 (talk) 05:45, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

@Throast: what more could WP possibly want for him to be labelled a bona fide Nazi sympathizer? Does he have to be caught in the act doing the Nazi salute, or make a song humanizing Hitler as a misunderstood good guy with a temper tantrum like himself? I don't get it; reliable sources agree that he made those remark off his own accord. Quite frankly, this attempt in finding nuance behind his nasty remarks belongs to social media forums. I agree with Muboshgu. Nineteen Ninety-Four guy (talk) 12:22, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

Nineteen Ninety-Four guy, I didn't comment on the fact that he cannot be labeled as a Nazi, I'm commenting on categorization. In order for a person to be categorized as a Nazi on Wikipedia, their Nazism has to be a defining characteristic (WP:COPDEF). That's a pretty high standard, and I don't think it's met (yet) in this case. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 12:26, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
Reverted the recent addition of the category American neo-Nazi's on that basis. nableezy - 05:53, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
Also, which source exactly says Kanye identified as a Nazi? I see the Times of Israel says that, but I cant see any other sources doing so, and the closest thing I can find to a transcript here doesnt seem to have him saying that. It certainly has him praising Hitler and veering in to Holocaust denial, but where does he actually "identify as a Nazi"? Surely there is something more than a twitter video from an unverified account with 1033 followers to prove that he said this? nableezy - 05:59, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
If nobody has anything better than the single Times of Israel piece that makes a claim that no other source makes about an extremely widely covered interview then I am going to remove the identified as a Nazi bit. That is an extraordinary claim, this is a BLP, and that requires extraordinary sourcing. nableezy - 16:12, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
The Newsweek article obviously isn't a full transcript, so I'm not sure what's the relevance there. The "I'm a Nazi" quote even made the headline in this Vanity Fair article. I wouldn't call it an extraordinary claim because it's not really a claim in the first place. It's reporting on his own words; no opinion or analysis added.
I agree with your removal of the category per my reasons above. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 16:06, 25 December 2022 (UTC)

I think the Nazi label should be removed as he only said it once during an interview to prove a point rather than a consistent thing he has identified himself as. He is an African American male for gods sake. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.109.64.38 (talk) 00:09, 7 May 2023 (UTC)

To prove what point? The only point I think he proved is that he self-identified as a Nazi. – Muboshgu (talk) 21:01, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
I think the problem here is not that it's not true, just that it's misleading to readers who are trying to find out about Kanye West. To read "later publicly praised Adolf Hitler... and identified as a Nazi" in the lead suggests he's known for being a Nazi-activist, despite this being a lone comment in a flippant context (Kanye states in the interview he's making a point nothing would ultimately happen to him if he courts controversy). Soapwort (talk) 00:31, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
I think people are reading into it too much. Publicly identifying as a Nazi only means as much; I wouldn't infer from that sentence alone that he's "known for being a Nazi activist". You seem to suggest that him "flippantly" proclaiming to be a Nazi to "make a point" takes away from said proclamation. It's not like the statement was made in isolation. We know that he's sympathized with Hitler for years. We know that he's associated himself with white supremacists and neo-Nazi sympathizers. He's denied the holocaust. He started and led an antisemitic hate campaign. Doesn't seem that far-fetched in context, and the RS we cite seem to agree. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 01:39, 2 September 2023 (UTC)

You seem to suggest that him "flippantly" proclaiming to be a Nazi to "make a point" takes away from said proclamation.

@Throast: Why the scare quotes? This is just what he's said.

It's not like the statement was made in isolation. We know that he's sympathized with Hitler for years. We know that he's associated himself with white supremacists and neo-Nazi sympathizers.

Yup, which is why Alex Jones states the media is calling him a Nazi, and prompts him to make the flippant remark doubling down. Kanye has made controversial comments like these constantly (his career was launched this way) and is famously bipolar. Nietzsche notably went insane at the end of his life, is it worth putting in his lead he claimed to be Dionysus?
I'm not saying this particular controversy about anti-semitism isn't notable, it is and should be included in the lead (particularly the holocaust denial, which he's made repeated sincere comments about). However, giving the reader the impression he claimed to sincerely be a neo-Nazi to follow the clickbait wording of references here is misleading. Soapwort (talk) 08:32, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
I've edited the page to remove the these comments specifically (I think they can be included under "a series of antisemitic statements") but included the holocaust denial since it's been a repeated notable controversy. Ping me and let me know what you think. Soapwort (talk) 08:51, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
Soapwort, I did not use scare quotes, I quoted your previous comment. I'm obviously opposed to the changes you made per my comments in this thread. I think I've laid out my stance very clearly. I have nothing more to add. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 13:27, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
I reverted the edit. Kanye praised Hitler. We all heard him do it. Sources say he did it. I see no reason to remove it. – Muboshgu (talk) 15:39, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
And recently he made a statement that he 'likes Jewish people again' after watching 21 Jump Street. Should we include this? I don't think we should, because it's WP:UNDUE for the lead... Soapwort (talk) 00:46, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
A single statement, largely regarded as insincere, doe snot measure up to the piles of sources and examples of his antisemitism. Zaathras (talk) 00:51, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
Firstly, your claim that it's largely regarded as insincere is not backed up by sources. Secondly, why is that particular claim undue but not the "praised Hitler and identified as a Nazi" comment which Kanye himself implies are insincere? Once again, I proposed moving these two comments out of the lead into the article and keeping the mention of antisemitic/holocaust denial controversy. Not every strange comment Kanye makes is worth including in the lead. Soapwort (talk) 06:34, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
As you have been opposed by several editors, it would be unwise of you to choose a path of edit-warring to get your way. Zaathras (talk) 04:22, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
Considering there are several editors on both side of the issue and you're reverting edits without addressing the possible violation of of several policies (WP:UNDUE, WP:NOTNEWS, borderline WP:BLP issues) on the talk page, I'm not particularly worried about your vague threat. Soapwort (talk) 04:46, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
There is one; you. The onus is on you to gain consensus, so until then it remains as-is. Zaathras (talk) 21:34, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
Did you read what you just linked? The responsibility for achieving consensus for inclusion is on those seeking to include disputed content. Soapwort (talk) 23:15, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

Summary/lead suggestion

To be clear, I'm a new user on here (and I'm analyzing this article for an assignment). My largest issue is with the balance of content in the top summary. I believe that one of the previous users here had a similar suggestion, but mine is quite different. Most of the top summary is focused almost entirely on Kanye's musical career and awards, with the last 30% or so briefly mentioning his work in fashion design and his controversial views. I would suggest reworking it to remove some of the borderline unnecessary content (e.g., the list of some of his awards) and replace it with slightly more context regarding his other professional endeavors and personal views. Everything about his road to glory and musical history shouldn’t have to be there Torbslifre (talk) 10:30, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
Another editor proposed the same in an earlier thread. I'll go ahead and remove everything starting at Born in Atlanta.... If editors want to re-include anything, it should be discussed here per WP:ONUS. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 13:50, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
Taking out the album names was unwarranted, especially when there's text saying "Six of West's albums were included on Rolling Stone's 2020 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list". How are readers supposed to know which ones this refers to? Furthermore, it looks incomplete without exploring his musical career beyond accolades/rankings. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 21:40, 13 October 2023 (UTC)
What do you propose adding? I'm sure we can agree that his complete discography does not belong in the lead. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 20:28, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
In terms of general lead section standards I think it's necessary to have a background/history paragraph or two added, only problem is the length of course.
Here's my attempted overview. He's been a producer since 1996, gained recognition with Roc-A-Fella Records, and released his debut album, The College Dropout, in 2004, and founded the label GOOD Music afterwards. He gained further popularity and acclaim with subsequent albums, especially My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Yeezus, and did collaborations with Jay-Z and Kid Cudi with Watch the Throne and Kids See Ghosts respectively. Reading the last version of the article before the paragraph removal, his evolving musical styles should definitely be noted, something along the lines of "initially exploring sampled old-school soul music before diversifying with musical elements from orchestras, to synthesizers and autotune, to Christian and gospel music." Specific albums in that sentence probably don't need to be noted.
As for the Rolling Stone sentence change "Six" to "Several" in "Six of West's albums", so there shouldn't be a forced mention or something. Carlinal (talk) 18:28, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
I prefer this over what was there before. Is this emphasis on those three albums (especially...) supported by the body? If not, we'd need a separate citation. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 18:33, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
TCD, MBDTF and Yeezus? I don't think the former has to be cited (it's his debut after all), and you can do what you want with the latter two. Since West's career center is in music, at least three solo albums should be listed, but at this point it's outside of my ability. I don't know this article as much as you guys, but I hope my overview provides a template. Carlinal (talk) 18:46, 15 October 2023 (UTC)

Vague terms like "several" are best avoided, especially when more specific counts can be provided. I minimally would recommend adding back The College Dropout along with the other five that made the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" count plus the Watch the Throne and Kids See Ghosts albums to show how his musical endeavors haven't just been solo efforts. We probably wouldn't have to emphasize sales/chart details for him unless they were unprecedented achievements. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 22:31, 15 October 2023 (UTC)

Agreed. Would you be willing to write up a draft? Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 14:26, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

Looks great to me. A clear improvement over the current version. Not sure if we need to include the "other awards", i.e. the last sentence in the first paragraph, but I don't feel strongly either way. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 23:35, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
I now understand that at this point he's done so much beyond music that some details had to be left out for the sake of a balanced scope. At least his solo albums are listed. My only disagreement is over the exclusion of GOOD Music but otherwise this is great! Carlinal (talk) 10:41, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

Cultural impact of Kanye West?

I believe Kanye West is due for a "Cultural impact" article in the same vein as other artists like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. While browsing through Google Scholar out of curiosity, I found multiple scholarly articles that have analyzed Kanye West's influence as an artist and a cultural figure - including a book aptly titled "The Cultural Impact of Kanye West". I haven't had time to write up a draft yet, but I'd imagine an article of this topic would highlight him both as a prominent cultural icon of the 21st century and one of the most polarizing figures in popular culture - in line with NPOV. It would have sections like his awards and achievements (self-explanatory), analysis (as in, scholarly and journalistic opinions both of his musical/lyrical themes and his views/controversial opinions*), references in popular culture (like the infamous South Park episode; and of course keeping in mind WP:NOT and MOS:TRIVIA), impact on the fashion industry, and just overall more specific influence on artists both inside and outside of rap. Here are 9 other sources below that could start us off.

  1. "Can't Tell Me Nothing": Symbolic Violence, Education, and Kanye West
  2. The Innocent and the Runaway: Kanye West, Taylor Swift, and the Cultural Politics of Racial Melodrama
  3. The Routledge Research Companion to Popular Music and Gender
  4. Resist! Protest Media and Popular Culture in the Brexit-Trump Era
  5. "Wake Up, Mr. West" Kanye West and the Double Consciousness of Black Celebrity
  6. Pessimistic Themes in Kanye West's Necrophobic Aesthetic
  7. Kanye and Adidas: Money, Misconduct and the Price of Appeasement (NY Times)
  8. As Coachella approaches, Kanye West's legacy hangs by a thread (LA Times)
  9. How Ye Changed Music (Complex)

I'd understand if they're a lot to read, but even the first two sources alone in conjunction with the book proves this topic easily passes SIGCOV and GNG, and even NPOV/DUE. If someone is willing to make a draft with these sources, I'd help edit it later depending on if I have time. Keep in mind there are plenty more sources that definitely exist.

*Speaking of which, the Views of Kanye West page has quite sparse commentary on journalists and scholars' perspectives on his views - whether they're misinformed and/or justified. Most of it just seems kind of news-like. Perhaps this article could also add more analysis that the Views article lacks. PantheonRadiance (talk) 08:30, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

checkY Support for an article, the existence of the above books I think are valid secondary sources and would prove that the existence of the article would not be OR. But be cautious Perhaps this article could also add more analysis that the Views article lacks all work must be cited and not WP:OR. microbiologyMarcus (petri dishgrowths) 20:04, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
Oh yes of course; I meant to imply that the analysis of Kanye West's views would be reliably sourced as well, thank you :)
But regardless of whether to include it in the Views article or the potential Impact article, there needs to be some inclusion of analysis beyond just breaking news. PantheonRadiance (talk) 01:45, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

Birth Name

Kanye Omari West better known as Kanye West is redundant.

Other celebrities who use their real names are not credited by their full names before a shortened version on Wikipedia, so why Kanye?

yes, I know his new name is "Ye" but that doesn't matter, it's not like his birth name's middle name being omitted changes anything

4TheLuvOfFax (talk) 00:02, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

This is kind of a unique situation. His legal name differs from his birth name, and neither are his stage name or WP:COMMONNAME. "Kanye West", which is his COMMONNAME, is not the same as "Kanye Omari West", his birth name. I don't see an issue with how it's written now. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs)
His birth and common name are literally the same thing aside from the middle name, most celebrities don't go by their middle names publicly anyways. 4TheLuvOfFax (talk) 16:04, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

Influence of Ye on modern music, fashion

Ye's widely claimed to be one of the the most influential artist of the 21st century, yet there's no lead indicating so. PanokWarszawa (talk) 11:47, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

This has been amply discussed. WP:EXCEPTIONAL claims require exceptional sourcing, especially when featured in the lead section. Two sources under Kanye West#Musical impact currently support the claim that he is among the most "critically acclaimed" popular music artists (much more specific than artists generally). Kayne West has impacted hip hop culture. He broke the stereotype that rap isn't just about rappers rapping about crimes, women, money, and drugs. He broke the stereotype that rappers aren't just gangsters.

We typically speak of legacies in terms of an artist's whole body of work or life. Considering that West is neither dead nor done with music, there is no legacy to speak of yet. That's the reason the legacy section was renamed a few months back (don't feel like digging it up in the edit history right now). Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 20:28, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

Apology to the Jewish community

Recently, Kanye West has apologized to the actions that he did in late 2022, however this maybe a stunt for his upcoming album BavKraft (talk) 09:43, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
