Obituary with full name, dates, biography

[edit]

From (1845) Neuer Nekrolog der Deutschen 21, 1843, part 1: 251–252:

His full non-Latinised name was Karl Anton Epiphanius Matzek, born 5 February 1810, died 28 March 1843. Not being fluent in German myself, I attempted to Google Translate the text here (it was difficult especially because of the Fraktur font), and it sounds like he had poor health starting as early as 1836, which makes it no wonder he died at only 33 years old. He presumably died in Breslau, where he was teaching staff in a Bürgerschule (citizen school) there (he left the University of Breslau in 1837). There is no doubt this is the same person as in this Wikipedia article, because it mentions his dissertation having the title "Necrophororum monographiae particula prima Ace".

Im not sure how best to rewrite this article with the above reference (aside from his full name and dates), so I leave this here for someone else more suitable to use (especially if they can read German). Monster Iestyn (talk) 03:55, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Narky Blert Actually, this might be of interest to you I think, since you wrote this Wikipedia article 6 years ago. Monster Iestyn (talk) 15:42, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Monster Iestyn: Great find! I'm on it. I'm impressed that you got anything out of it if you don't know Fraktur (which I do). I'll keep you posted. Narky Blert (talk) 18:51, 19 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! It was mostly perseverance and referring to the Fraktur article constantly that helped me get what I could out of the text. Though even then a few letters gave me trouble (such as what I think is supposed to be "tz"?). I've already updated Wikidata and Wikispecies with the full name btw. @Narky Blert Hi, were you going to come back to this article at some point? I noticed you transcribed and translated Neue Nekrolog der Deutschen in your sandbox half a year ago, but you've done nothing since that I was aware of. I got a bit impatient and started adding some of the details in myself (as well as renaming the article itself), though honestly the article could do with a rewrite now that we know more about this person.
