Dates

[edit]

Birth

Some sources say 4 June, some say 3 June. Russian Wikipedia gives both OS and NS dates – 3/15 June (Константин Ба́льмонт родился 3 (15) июня 1867 в деревне Гумнищи Шуйского ...), so I lean towards that view.

Death

We currently show it as 24 December 1942. Some cites (including Russian Wikipedia) say he died on 23 December (Он скончался 23 декабря 1942 в приюте «Русский дом» в Нуази-ле-Гран, ...). This suggests that 24 December was the date of his burial. That would support a 23 December death, as burials tend not to happen on the very day of death, or on Christmas Day, even during wartime. Had he died on Christmas Eve, it’s likely he wouldn’t have been buried till at least 26 December. -- JackofOz (talk) 01:59, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling

[edit]

It's more common to see his surname transliterated as Bal'mont, to take account of the soft sign (ь) after л. Any objections to moving the article? -- JackofOz (talk) 01:59, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No? OK, done. -- JackofOz (talk) 04:38, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ezhiki, since I raised this issue here for discussion, waited 8 days, got no objections, and only then moved the page, the least you could have done was to come here and explain why you thought my move was inappropriate. Now we have an article titled "Balmont" but the name is spelled "Bal'mont" throughout it. That's a far worse outcome than I ever imagined, or should ever be the case. -- JackofOz (talk) 02:31, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Jack! First of all, I apologize for neglecting to check the talk page before moving the article; this is partly because the move I made seemed (and still seems) so obvious to me. Had I noticed this thread, I would have most certainly commented here first. As for changing the spelling throughout the article, I actually added it to my list of things to do, but haven't got a chance to do it just yet.
As for the move itself, it was done in accordance to WP:RUS, namely per #3 of its Conventionality/People criteria. As a simple Google Books search would attest, both "Balmont" and "Bal'mont" spellings are used in English works about this person, so both are correct. The former spelling, however, complies with the main WP:RUS rules, which prescribe dropping apostrophes from romanization, for simplicity. Dropping apostrophes (which stand for soft sign) is also a common practice when romanizing Russian names in Wikipedia. Hope this answers your question, but please do not hesitate to contact me if anything is unclear of if you disagree with my interpretation of the guidelines. Seems we've both learned something tonight. My glorious quest to learn all of Wikipedia's rules, policies and guidelines continues. Thanks. -- JackofOz (talk) 17:22, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, good luck there :)—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 17:28, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Anyway his family name is of Lithuanian origin, so why put ' sign in his family name?

Guys, I'm Russian, I've just heard the guy saying Bilmont, not Balmont here (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/Konstantin_Dmitriyevich_Bal%27mont.ru.vorb.oga) on the page

I believe it's possible for you to record the correct version if that one is false Drowninginlimbo (talk) 12:24, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
