Gruber's Sexuality[edit]

I do not think it is right to classify the character of Gruber as being gay. My reasons for this are as follows:

No character in the show (including Gruber himself) directly referred to Gruber as being gay;
Gruber was never seen in the show as being part of a homosexual relationship.
In the last episode it turns out that Gruber has married Helga.

It is true that the character of Gruber was stereotypically gay (by his mannerisms and actions). However, there is a difference between such a character, and that of an actively practising homosexual. The current state of this article seems to suggest the latter (Quote - "Gruber, although never quite admitting it directly, is gay"). I do not believe it is right to label a character "gay", when this is neither confirmed in the show, or confirmed by the show's creators.

I think it is better to refer to Gruber as seemingly gay - as in the main 'Allo 'Allo! article. Please also see this discussion - Talk:'Allo 'Allo!#Edit_28.11.05; as this issue has appeared before.

You'll recall though, the 'No matches' scene in the pilot. René asks Gruber if he's 'one of them', meaning is he a Resistance operative, and Gruber instantly interprets it the other way and replies, "Well, it was very lonely on the Russian front..." And at the end of the scene, LeClerc asks René, "Is he one of us?" and René answers, "No! He's one of them!" at which point Gruber rushes back to the bar and begs them 'not to tell everybody'. It's certainly possible that other characters could draw the wrong conclusions from his general behavior, but it's hard to interpret this very first scene of Gruber's, at least, any other way than him stating that he's not completely straight.

Guy Siner has also specifically described Gruber as gay in at least one interview, and in the 'Allo 'Allo episode of Series 4 of Comedy Connections, David Croft referred to the series implication that Gruber was homosexual, and stated that he 'obviously was'. In The Return of 'Allo 'Allo! it was made quite specifically clear that Gruber was gay. I think this new material can probably be used to confirm Gruber's sexuality for the purposes of this article. DWaterson 21:26, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Grubers Role[edit]

The actor playing Gruber appeared in an episode of "That's My Bush" playing the leader of a German speaking nation (believe it was Austria). He did not play the Gruber character but the role clearly referenced Allo Allo.

The TV Special[edit]

Your thoughts are in the right direction, but not entirely right. In the last episode of season 9, it's years after the war, and Gruber, Helga and the colonel visit Nouvion once more. Gruber has married (!) Helga and together they have lots of kids. The colonel becomes their chauffeur, driving in a big Mercedes. SietskeEN 18:31, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The confusion is because The Return of 'Allo 'Allo special seems to ignore the series's final episode. Gruber is now chauffeur to Le Clerc and his new bride, Mimi. Timrollpickering (talk) 12:15, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
