Interview with Katie Couric[edit]

Ryan Meinert AKA TooFaded Katie Couric interviewed Wayne on Wednesday night's Grammy special on CBS television. The interview contains some good info to expand the section on Wayne's early life. --Andrewlp1991 (talk) 00:45, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

How Can I Edit the Discography Section of the Page???[edit]

I know of a few more official mixtapes that he released that have not been added to the "Discography" section. I would like to suck that information and add them. Thanks-ThisIsThaCarterThisIsThaCarter (talk) 02:35, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

The "Drought Is Over" Mixtape Series? I have finally got a hold of all the official copies of the "The Drought Is Over" mixtape series hosted by The Empire and Lil Wayne. Can I have permission to put them under the mixtape section and create a new page for each of them. I have the corect track listing and song titles. I also have the original artwork for it. I can also post reviews from websites for some of them. DroKIDCASH (talk) 01:13, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

The "Drought Is Over" series are not official mixtapes by lil wayne he even had issues with The Empir for making thses mixtapes Lil Wayne's only mixtapes are "Da Drought" Series & Dedication Series —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.18.218.111 (talk) 03:28, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

UNRELIABLE SOURCE![edit]

Nope. YouTube is not a reliable source, and videos from youtube cannot be used as sources.—Kww(talk) 16:44, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Honestly what's the difference if YouTube or MTV uploads a video. It's still the ARTIST themselves saying the information. SE KinG. User page. Talk. 17:03, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
You can trust MTV not to doctor the video and audio to misrepresent the interview. The same cannot be said about anonymous YouTube posters.—Kww(talk) 03:23, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
If I may - I do not think it is an issue - and I think no matter what site uploads it it's the interview that counts. It is like saying a documentary posted on youtube is not a documentary at all. I honestly don't see the conflict in this argument.Babylonian Armor (talk) 14:04, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Exactly ... a documentary posted by an anonymous uploader on YouTube can't be treated as a documentary at all. There needs to be credibility and reliablity in the publishing chain, or the source isn't reliable.—Kww(talk) 14:22, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Now that is just nonsense. It sounds like now you are simply biased and unfavorable towards YouTube. If it is the artist speaking, word for word, mouth per mouth, the exact words heard, it can't possibly be fake. If there was any altercations by the uploader, it would be somewhat to completely obvious. Osh33m (talk) 21:03, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

introductory paragraph thingie..[edit]

As mentioned in one of the older posts, i think the introduction of lil'wayne is quite poor. Can someone make it contain his award winnings, his funny style of lyrics and voice, aswell as him being the rapper with most released mixtapes (not sure on this)and one of the leading rapper in this new generation of rappers, and one of the most succecfull rappers/one of the most selling records in the last couple of years. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Oozeling (talkcontribs) 23:30, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

if weez said it it's obviously the truth, if it's about him. no, youtube is not a very good site to look up info on, but interviews are obviously good. hush. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bubbiandfifi;* (talkcontribs) 13:05, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

2008's Best Album?[edit]

"Following Tha Carter III's achievement of selling over 3 million copies, becoming 2008's best record, Wayne re-signed with Cash Money Records for a multi-album deal."

That needs to be changed to 'best-selling record'. It currently looks as though it's been written by a fanboy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Poet LeSwung (talkcontribs) 21:21, 4 June 2009 (UTC) and what does that have to do with the subject? Smokiewight (talk) 07:28, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Rock?[edit]

The classification of Lil Wayne as a rock artist is sketchy at best. Listening to these new "rock" songs, you realize that all he's really done is replace a synth line with a guitar line. The drums are also louder than the guitar (Traditionally rock is more centered on the guitar, with the drums providing rhythm.) To legitimately be called a rock album, there would need to be a lead guitar in the songs, not the sole rhythm guitar that is featured in Prom Queen. Even the "solos" are obviously just reworked synth parts. The relative lack of guitar in Hot Revolver is also questionable. At one point the normal drums are even abandoned for a traditional hip hop drum loop. Classifying Lil Wayne as a rock artist because of this album would require a re-evaluation of what rock is, and would probably require the addition of acts such as Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys to the growing catalog of "rock artists." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.251.170.19 (talk) 21:25, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

i would also add that rock shouldn't be in his list of music genres. Smokiewight (talk) 04:44, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

SI

While dont I agree that Rebirth is a little less than most "Rock albums" out there, I'd have to agree with placing "rock" as a genre he does. "Rebirth" has been mentioned as a rock album in almost every publication that mentions it, therefore even if it's something less than say a Red Hot Chili Peppers album it still deserves it's title as a rock album. Deathawk (talk) 00:55, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

releasing a "rock" album don't make you a rock artist.Smokiewight (talk) 05:34, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Just cuz the media says some band or artist is a certain genre, it isnt nessecerily true... e.g. when the media says pop-punk bands are emo, which they obviously aren't... just cuz you write articles for a magazine or sutch, it doesn't make you capable of dictating which genre is what... the reason the media has said his latest album is rock, is because theese articles has been written by hip-hoppers, who doesn't know shit about what rock actually is... if you can find one single rock-magazine which says the album is rock, then it IS rock... sorry about my bad english...--Arneandre (talk) 21:41, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Ghostwriting[edit]

I've read on several websites that Wayne has had (and still has) ghostwriters (people who write songs for him). These ghostwrites include Gillie the Kid, Drake and possibly more. I can't find any reliable sources, though. Here are some of the sites where I've gotten this: #1 and #2. I had another one, but the site was apparently on Wikipedia's blacklist.

Maybe there should be a section on that if anyone finds reliable sources?

Guitar[edit]

Continued from above, the guy can't play guitar. I've seen him live and while he's not great, he can still play much better than alot of artists, so it should be left alone on his paege that he can play, because he can. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Censor3000 (talkcontribs) 10:10, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

you've posted that already.the comment that he can play guitar should be left off, because he can't yet. Smokiewight (talk) 04:56, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

You both need to remain civil with each other. The instrument and occupation fields of the infobox are intended for the subject's notable skills/occupations. Lil Wayne gained fame through his rapping, and not his guitar playing, so the "instrument" field should say "Vocals" and nothing else. Similarly, while he is notable for being a rapper and CEO, he is not notable for playing guitar, so the "occupation" field should say "Rapper, CEO" and nothing else. He probably plays some other instruments (as most musicians do), but we shouldn't be listing them. GlassCobra 15:19, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
One question, How an am being uncivil??? And in the recording of Rebirth Lil Wayne played Gutair for alot of the songs. For example: On Fire, Prom Queen and Knockout. But i get what your saying that he is not known for his gutair playing. STAT -Verse 19:09, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

i would like to know where is the proof he can play guitar,if no one can produce it,then keep it off the infobox. Smokiewight (talk) 02:34, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

He can't play the guitar! He just acts like he does, and some people are silly enough to believe it.--188.27.126.190 (talk) 19:47, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Gang affiliations[edit]

Saying that someone is affiliated with a gang is a serious accusation and could be seen as libelous if incorrect, especially on a BLP. So the evidence that this rapper is in fact associated with a gang requires above-average, exceptionally reliable proof. Let's take a look at the sources that have been attempted to be used to back up this assertion:

 • [1] - not a reliable source; further, Lil Wayne is criticized by another rapper for pretending to be affiliated with a gang; if anything, this source would make the case against Lil Wayne being a Blood
 • [2] - a copyright violation and therefore unable to be used; further, Lil Wayne does not actually say he is a member of any gang in the video
 • [3] - "Lil Wayne’s clothing, hand gestures in music videos and rap lyrics all suggest" - this is original research, not to mention that the source is far from reliable
 • [4] - not a reliable source, also says "Lil Wayne and Birdman and their alleged Blood ties" (again OR), again criticizes Lil Wayne for pretending
 • [5] - not a reliable source, no mention of gang ties
 • [6] - explicitly says that gang sign being performed by Lil Wayne is part of a PR campaign for his career

This sources are not sufficient to support the claim that Lil Wayne is a member of any gang. Per WP:V and WP:RS, the burden of proof is on the users trying to add material, an onus that has not been fulfilled here. The edit warring over this issue needs to cease immediately. GlassCobra 19:15, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Well of note Streetgangs.com is very reliable for info about gangs. Not to add orgional research but he has said in over 300 songs "Blood Gang Motherfukker" or something of that. He has made alot of songs and mixtapes with titles refering to his gang ties including "Everything is Red" and the mixtape "Blood Is Thicker Than Water 12" with him posing with fellow blood Game posing wearing only red the color of the bloods picture here Also he titled his song Hustler Muzik instead of Hustler Music because bloods don't use c's when spelling muzik. STAT -Verse 22:01, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

he is NOT a blood!sheesh, you're gullible. Smokiewight (talk) 06:02, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Just cause you don't like Lil Wayne doesn't mean you have to ruin wikipedia by adding origion research to everything. STAT -Verse 19:00, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
Nothing about like him or not needs to be involved. At most, these sources add up to "Lil Wayne uses Bloods symbology in his marketing."—Kww(talk) 20:05, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
Yeah I agree with Kww, that should be added instead of making an outright claim that he is in the bloods. STAT -Verse 20:11, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

i don't hate him or like him.i don't even know him.but, you can't prove he's a blood any more than i can prove he isn't.you, however pretty much DID make an outright claim he is.and btw,it was an observation, not an attack.if you can't handle an opinion about yourself, don't log on.i respect your opinion, bro.just respect mine.no hard feelings.blessings. Smokiewight (talk) 04:32, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Well im changing my mind that it SHOULDN'T be an outright claim and include in the article "Lil Wayne uses Bloods symbology in his marketing" cause whether anybody likes it or not he does use it. STAT -Verse 22:44, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

but, whether he uses it or doesn't isn't the issue.is there any truth to the fact he is one? so far,not one person has been able to provide iron clad proof, just like i can't provide proof he isn't one. Smokiewight (talk) 03:51, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Referenced by Obama[edit]

Is it notable to have this section? He may have been referenced many times but I don't think a reference from the President is worthy enough to have a section of its own. --Esanchez(Talk 2 me or Sign here) 23:24, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

I disagree - Obama's the current commander in chief of the country, and to have him publicly stating that he keeps Lil Wayne on his iPod not only gives a bit of insight into his personal life (which admittedly, might belong on Obama's page, though it would look even more out of place there) is relevant, and certainly is indicative of the extent of Lil Wayne's appeal.

Lil Wayne didn't start in 92![edit]

Lil Wayne didn't start in 92 because he's not old skool! If he did, the Hot Boys were'nt "big". I know he didn't start in 92 anyways. The gun possession charge[edit]

In the section about the NY gun possession charge, it states that the gun was found "on his person", only to state later: "police discovered a .40 caliber pistol on his person. The gun, which was registered to his manager, was in a bag located near the rapper." This is obviously a discrepancy, and further, New York State's gun laws are such that the difference between finding it on his person and finding it in a bag "near" the rapper is the difference between a relatively low-level "attempted possession of a weapon" charge, and a potential 25-year sentence for actually having a concealed weapon. If you check the link, it specifies that the gun was found in a bag "near" him, and while it did end up being linked to him, that's the reason he was out of prison in November rather than still being there now (with potentially years to go on his sentence). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skabbonica (talkcontribs) 16:23, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Lil Wayne Sets Guiness World Record[edit]

Lil Wayne recently set a World Record when he toppled The Oreo Cookies brand attempt at the same. The record was for the most "likes" to a single FaceBook post within a 24 Hour Time Frame. When Lil Wayne heard about the Oreos record attempt he decided to Compete for the same record. Lil Wayne has a FaceBook fan base over 20 Million Users and it did not take him long to break Oreos record. For more information on this Story you can view the original source where it was discovered by using this Lil Wayne link. Nickname[edit]

Apparently, "Weezy" is a sufficiently well-known nickname for Lil' Wayne that he used it in the hostname of an official site (weezythanxyou), but the article never explicitly mentions it. It's not an obvious nickname by any means, and I think it would be helpful to fit it in somewhere, possibly even in the article's leader as an a/k/a. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.255.193.125 (talk) 12:59, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

The aka is only for names the artist has officially released music under ex. Diddy: P. Diddy and Puff Daddy. Its just a nickname and not an official stage name so it doesn't earn a mention in the article. STATic message me! 05:16, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

REMOVAL Request: "He is widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers alive, garnering acclaim for his profound lyricism." ??????[edit]

I was offended when I read this. There shouldn't be room for this type of opinion in a simple intro paragraph, especially something that in no way can be cited. I am trying to leave my biased opinion about Lil Wayne's "talent" out of this discussion, but in no way is he widely regarded as even a great rapper, and Lil Wayne and lyricism mentioned in the same breath defies all logic.

I only put it there to help all you ignorant people see that Lil Wayne is a pop artist. Hip hop is dead nowadays, and Lil Wayne is definitely the biggest example of that. Date confusion - hospital admission[edit]

There has been some conflicting information on the date Lil Wayne was admitted to the ICU. The initial report from TMZ (http://www.tmz.com/2013/03/14/lil-wayne-hospitalized-seizures/) made it clear he was first given medical attention at the hospital in the evening of Tuesday, March 12 and released in the early hours of Wednesday, March 13, and then later went back and was put into the ICU. The initial report from TMZ about him returning to Cedars-Sinai and being admitted to the ICU was published on Friday, March 15 and noted that the admission to the ICU occurred "just hours later" from his Wednesday, March 13 release (http://www.tmz.com/2013/03/15/lil-wayne-seizures-hospitalized-drugs-sizzurp-critical-condition-icu/). It seems many other news sources interpreted "hours later" as referring to the day the article was published (Friday) and so reported him as having been admitted to the ICU on Friday. I originally wrote in this article that he was admitted the 13th, but another user pointed out the articles listing it as Friday and changed it to reflect that. However, the original source (TMZ) published another article today (Monday, March 18) noting specifically that Lil Wayne was admitted to the ICU on Wednesday, March 13 and that today (the 18th) is his sixth day in the ICU (http://www.tmz.com/2013/03/18/lil-wayne-intensive-care-unit-hospital-los-angeles/). Accordingly, I have changed the date listed in the paragraph on this "event" back to Wednesday, March 13. Hope that clarifies any confusion. Starswept (talk) 21:50, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Starswept

All the sites that reported it happened on Wendsday took that information from TMZ, which according to his camp has been getting all the facts wrong. Birdman also said just today that he had the most recent seizure on Friday not Wednesday. As I was saying, with the way the public reacted when TMZ reported that he was in critical condition, we would have known about this the day it occurred, not days later. Source: [7]. What is more reliable, a celebrity gossip website or his friend and mentor since he was a teenager? Also Mack Maine recently said that Wayne was released from the hospital.[8]. STATic message me! 03:18, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
You might want to re-add the comment you earlier deleted here because your comment reads a little out of context unless you go back and compare versions to see your deleted comment. Anyways, this hiphopdx.com link you provided (dated March 18) states that Birdman said a seizure occurred Friday, but that Lil Wayne was hospitalized on Tuesday, March 12 for dehydration and exhaustion (which is a new twist on things and seems to be conflating the issue with what happened in October) and then released, before being readmitted Friday, March 15 after the seizure:
"Additionally, the executive and artist in his own right said that Wayne experienced a single seizure on Friday (March 15). This was contrary to initial reports of multiple seizures. Friday's health concerns were however Wayne's second seizure incident of last week, following a Tuesday (March 13) hospitalization that was said to be a result of dehydration and exhaustion."
Note that this article doesn't even correctly name the dates of the month, listing Tuesday as March 13, when it was in fact March 12. So I would take it with as large a grain of salt as I would TMZ.
Yet the MTV piece (also dated March 18) currently cited in the Wiki article Source: [9] has Birdman saying that Lil Wayne had one seizure only, and it was on Tuesday, and he's been in the hospital continuously ever since then:
"According to the music mogul, Wayne was on his way to a video shoot when he had the seizure on March 12. An ambulance then took him to the hospital, where he's been ever since."
So it's not true that all media sources listing Tuesday as the date of admission are taking it from TMZ - MTV, which is a reliable source, is taking the information not from TMZ, but directly from Birdman, who you say is highly reliable. It seems that there are a lot of people speaking on Lil Wayne's behalf all over the place, and they're saying conflicting things. Hopefully he will have an official publicist make a statement. I don't see any benefit to us arguing about it here when it seems the media we have to rely on for sources is extremely confused as to the course of the events (which might be intentional on the part of Lil Wayne's friends/associates). And I'll update the article to reflect his release (note though that many articles reporting the release are consistent with his admission being Tuesday, noting that he is being released after six days and that he was admitted Tuesday - see this MTV article Source: [10]_ Starswept (talk) 03:59, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Starswept

Different Infobox?[edit]

Is there a reason why ever other artist I've searched uses Template:Infobox person while this article uses another? --66.112.167.5 (talk) 02:24, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

The {{Infobox musical artist}} that this one uses is certainly correct. I can't comment on all the others. Maybe the people who created the infoboxes didn't know of this template? I don't know --Stfg (talk) 21:13, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

noticeable absence of lawsuits[edit]

So , have just been doing some research related to mixtapes and uncleared samples and Lil Wayne comes up in respect to Lil Wayne and Jonsin's unauthorised use of a sample from Karma-Ann Swanepoel's “Once” in creating the backing for “I Feel Like Dying” - Jonsin is the direct target of one lawsuit started by Lil Wayne (as Dwayne Carter) and an indirect target of the suit brought by Urband & Lazar Music Publishing against Dwayne Carter in respect of Karma-Ann Swanepoel's publishing rights

I will concede that there is little available material on which to provide a complete and unbiased view of the lawsuit, its merits and its outcomes, but it should still be included in any definitive biography, as most of Lil Wayne's lawsuits do (this pair are a notable exception in this regard)Bandcoach (talk) 18:56, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Instruments[edit]

Does he plays the guitar as shown on "Let It Rock" music video or was that just for a pose? Does he plays any other instruments? --Wudumindif (talk) 06:23, 10 January 2014 (UTC) dman bryan — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.109.174.109 (talk) 01:13, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
