Untitled[edit]

Although the coincidence of dioceses with departements and of the new provisional ecclesiastical provinces with regions is by no means total the influence of state structures on the geographical shape of the the Catholic church in France is increasingly evident. This accompanies a system whereby according to the Briand-Ceretti conventions (with which Benedict XVI is known to be unhappy) diocesan bishops are appointed by a process involving the French Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Affairs. In the case of the Concordat dioceses of Strasburg and Metz it is the French President who appoints after consulting the Vatican----Clive Sweeting

Archdioceses of France[edit]

In metropolitan France there are more than fifteen archdioceses. The list of archdioceses is as follows:

  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Besançon
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Bordeaux
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Cambrai
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Clermont
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Dijon
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Lyon
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Marseille
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Montpellier
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Paris
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Poitiers
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Reims
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Rennes
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Rouen
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Toulouse
  • Metropolitan Archdiocese of Tours
  • Archdiocese of Sens and Auxerre
  • Archdiocese of Chambéry, Maurienne, and Tarentaise
  • Archdiocese of Aix, Arles and Embrun
  • Archdiocese of Albi, Castres and Lavaur
  • Archdiocese of Auch, Condom, Lectoure and Lombez
  • Archdiocese of Bourges
  • Archdiocese of Strasbourg

The first fifteen archdioceses are also metropolitans. Strasbourg is an archdiocese immediately subject to the Holy See. Sens, Chambéry, Aix, Albi, Auch and Bourges are no longer metropolitans. However, this does not detract from the fact that they have not lost their dignity of archdioceses. Therefore, the article should make it clear that there are actually 22 archdioceses in France even when only 15 of them are the main archdiocese of an Ecclesiastical Province with suffragan dioceses under them.

Thank you I am researching into this list and was curious why you have differing numbers of archdioceses. Benkenobi18 (talk) 08:38, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
