The Red List

[edit]

This is a list of unicorn startup companies that do not have an article in Wikipedia. These company articles either have never existed, or existed previously but where subsequently deleted.

Missing company ?

[edit]

Adaptive Biotechnology is missing from the list, like other unicorns that are instead present (until they go public) in the cbinsights list, which is more precise. Also you forget sometimes to move unicorns from the list to the one of the past unicorns, like for Crowdstrike. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.34.81.215 (talk) 15:14, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Swiss French Media often refers to Mindmaze as the first unicorn company in Switzerland. Unfortunately, I don't know its exact valorisation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Caïus Gracchus (talkcontribs) 08:58, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Done Hi Caïus Gracchus, it looks like an editor has went ahead an added MindMaze to the list. Have a nice day! Daylen (talk) 05:35, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The UK online car retailer Cazoo is missing from this list. It's latest round of funding secured £25m[1][2][3] took its valuation to $1bn in June 2020. Cazoo was founded by Alex Chesterman[4], the entrepreneur behind successful start-ups Lovefilm[5] and Zoopla [6].

Another one (Added by sventsh): Is there a reason as to why Neo4j is not included in the list? They have recently been reported as having a 2 billion dollar evaluation (https://neo4j.com/press-releases/neo4j-announces-seriesf-funding/). Neo4j has a wikipedia page, although it is noted as having problems: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo4j — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sventsh (talkcontribs) 14:20, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Defunct unicorns

[edit]

Should unicorn companies that went bankrupt (such as Jawbone) be included in the list? Daylen (talk) 21:57, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I reckon it need always be *current* so no. Otherwise, it sets up a bad precedent where every defunct company could make the list and can block the currently active ones from being shown. Unicornblood2018 (talk) 10:37, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If so, should we remove FTX now as it has filed for bankruptcy? DOsinga (talk) 18:49, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

LinkedIn valuation date is 2016 and exit date is 2011

Column for Founders

[edit]

I think we should have a column for the founder's name in the table. Lots of founders have their own Wikipedia Articles too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 182.75.45.1 (talk) 14:40, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This seems like a sensible addition to me! Itsfini (talk) 16:21, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Industry

[edit]

I've added a column for each company's industry as I thought it added to the page and helped group the companies. I've added industries for just over half the companies, so there's work to do to add industries for all the rest, but it was taking a bunch of time to do and I didn't want the copy I was working on to get too far out of sync with the live version. I've tried to implement all the changes that have happened since I took a snapshot to work on, but it's possible I've unintentionally reverted some changes at the same time - apologies if I have. Itsfini (talk) 18:22, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Subsidiary

[edit]

Does the list include subsidiary of publicly listed company? For example Postmates and Credit Karma. Those two are (or will be, I don't know if the acquisitions have been done) subsidiaries of Uber Technologies and Intuit respectively. Will those two be removed from the list? 180.252.46.64 (talk) 13:31, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

WP:NCORP implies that all examples of raised capital are trivial Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies)#Examples of trivial coverage. I started an RfC to discuss whether unicorn funding rounds are more notable than smaller/earlier rounds, such as seed or Series A, and are therefore not trivial. I'm not saying that the unicorn funding makes a company inherently notable, only that it's not trivial. The discussion seems to have tapered off, and I thought editors who watch this page and have an interest in finance might be able to participate and share their perspective. Here's the discussion: Wikipedia talk:Notability (organizations and companies)#RfC about coverage of unicorn funding rounds. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 18:05, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Outdated data

[edit]

The valuation table data on this page is outdated and needs change. The country-wise number of unicorn startups data was also outdated, but was updated today. Jainsh (talk) 06:33, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sortable Valuation Date column

[edit]

If you try to sort the current column for "Valuation Date", then it will sort by month, so that everything in August will be next to each other (independent of year) and April, August, and December will be before February. Can we change the Valuation Date column to YYYY-MM so that it is sortable? CaliViking (talk) 01:00, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Theranos ...

[edit]

Apologies in advance if there's an obvious answer to this question but, curious as to why Theranos is not listed. JohnDeere55 (talk) 12:30, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not an expert, but I believe it has been dissolved and liquidated. The company no longer exists. Heart (talk) 12:34, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Understood but, there are a number of companies listed under the section Former Unicorns with Exit Reasons such as Defunct and Bankruptcy, one of which would seem to fit Theranos. JohnDeere55 (talk) 12:40, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
