International Phonetic Alphabet
[edit]In response to a question about what verification is required of IPA, this information may be relevant (emphasis added).
IPA's purposes are to 1) represent the phonetics of words (how they sound), and 2) to give samples of the phonology of a language (how the language as a whole sounds). The second purpose concerns only linguists. The first purpose concerns any interested reader, but only to a limited degree, as transcribing words into IPA does not need to be perfect or overly precise ...[1]
Since often few sources exist to verify IPA or (more generally) correct pronunciation, unless there are multiple contradictory sources I wouldn't be too concerned about sources [edit: except to satisfy the editor here who apparently opposes inclusion of the IPA]. If sources disagree, you might include IPA for two or more alternatives. Dwpaul (talk) 16:42, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
