Requested move 19 April 2020

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Moved. English transliterations are generally preferred, but not when there is no support for them in reliable sources. King of ♥ 02:00, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Maskowskaya lineMaskoŭskaja line – After the recent move of Maskowskaya (Minsk Metro) to Maskoŭskaja (Minsk Metro), it makes sense to move the line which shares its name with the station. As noted by User:Netoholic in its move discussion, the two now "disagree". Note: This will require update of Template:Minsk Metro navbox, Template:MINSKMETRO-line1, and various articles that transclude them (i.e. all the Line 1 station articles) to reflect the revised name. We've the Maskoŭskaja Line already as a redirect (needed by the preceding/succeeding stations navbox). 84.236.27.178 (talk) 05:26, 19 April 2020 (UTC) Relisting. buidhe 10:19, 26 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose pending more info on what it's called in English sources. This seems extremely unlikely to me, as the diacritical in the proposed title is not something that would be expected in English-language sources. The issue here (and at the other recent referenced move) is not about the official transliteration into Roman alphabet, but rather about how it appears in English sources. I'm aware of WP:COMMONNAME, but it's confusing to have the line and the station share a name but use different spellings for them, so WP:CONSISTENT (and MOS:CONSISTENT) are also in play. It's used on this map and this one and has been the name of the WikiCommons category since 2014 (not that that counts for much); almost all my search results for "Maskowskaya line" are for WP mirrors, except for one listing of a bedsit, but results are thin for either.
To make it clear: I have read the previous discussions on the various issues with naming of Belarus geo articles, but have not partaken in any. I've done some gnoming around the Minsk Metro after the existing RMs completed: Uruchcha (Minsk Metro) was also moved, and I've updated the templates accordingly (and, meanwhile, fixed Template:S-line/MINSKMETRO right/Maskowskaya to be the correct terminus: The name of that and Template:S-line/MINSKMETRO left/Maskowskaya will also need to change if we change the name of the line: they expand to the names of the termini). 84.236.27.178 (talk) 06:18, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nobody has yet shown that the spelling "Maskowskaya line" is more common. I tried, but failed to find any online RS using this spelling, only mirrors or text copied from Wikipedia. In the alternate, perhaps we should revisit the decision for Maskoŭskaja (Minsk Metro), since it seems unlikely to me that one spelling would be common for the station but another for the line. (Let alone a third spelling, "Moskovskaya Line".)
If we've consensus to follow one Romanization for some Metro stations, as we did on 18 April with Uruchcha/Uručča and did during the currently-open move discussion with Barysawski trakt, then we should either apply that convention to the others per WP:CONSISTENT, or revert to the previous names. I've no preference which, but to leave a mix is a little WP:SURPRISEing. Nominator, IP changed. 62.165.198.73 (talk) 06:13, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If more stations are to be renamed then it would be better to dscuss them together: besides the minor inconvenience of updating related pages each time, discussing each separately could give the appearance of trying to change consensus by stealth. Over the last six weeks or so, the first five stations on this line have all been moved one by one. 94.21.253.28 (talk) 01:28, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
